Absolutly different, the best place ever!

Awesome place, we went there with a group of 12, after our time up-country, we needed a place to chill, and this one here is absolutely perfect, non-touristy, and fun. We were staying in Tree Houses, which was great. the view is the bomb and the food was the best country had to offer us.
We met up with some other group and together we did a tour in those traditional fisher boat, which was real fun and they gave us a surprisingly cheap deal. A chap from the staff, showed us the busy nightlife in Mtwapa, which is just nearby, and it made everything even more perfect, yet it was hard to get out of the Beach Bar, the place is just too nice. We all can really recommend this place, its not for the fuzzy and fancy types, but its for the real. Place is clean, very safe, and cheap.
The Beach was a bit rocky there and sandy here, and had some good spots for swimming. When the tide was out, we could walk to the next town, about one hour and we took Motorbike taxi back , which was easy.

Unique Quality: great view, great food, great people, great rooms...

or, for all of November:

Sunset is around 18:15.

And when the sun goes down it goes down quickly there is hardly any twilight its either day or night.

At night you can see the stars beautifully without all the usual light pollution too. Being in the southern hemisphere they appear upside down compared to the UK.

Take a taxi if you go out at night.

Re: DAYLIGHT TIMES IN MOMBASA

So thats why the stars at night appear upside down, I thought that was a result of all the Tuskers I'd been drinking!

Re: DAYLIGHT TIMES IN MOMBASA

Its when they start moving around and around and around that you know you shouldn't have had that last Tusker!

Being near the Equator, you get very equal daylight and night time hours. 12 /12
Also have a look at your own shadow at midday ! Can you see it.

Travel Tips for Mombasa

Tsavo East Wildlife Park visit for $20.00

by TIMBOND

Wildlife tour of Tsavo East Park. Seeing animals in the wild that for 30 years I had been seeing on TV only.

After giving the gate guards $20.00 and a case of bottled water we were allowed to enter. Regular tourist pay up to $600.00 for the same tour of the park.

The Market

by croisbeauty

The market place looks like an big mass and extremelly dirthy. In a normal places I usually buy some fruits or other things, here in Mombasa I just couldn't dare to do it. In a normal places there are tapes with running water, here in Mombasa I haven't seen one.

Local people - Swahili

by Squinchez

Mombasa has a diverse culture from Arabs to indians to africans to whites, but majority of local people are Muslims, who are used to speaking swahili so learning basic words in swahili might come very handy when in Mombasa. Although english is also greatly used, plus you may find two or more people who can speak Chinese, spanish , german or italian.

English ----Swahili
Jambo -----Hello
Habari gani?----- How are you?
Nzuri sana ------I'm fine, Thank you.
Jina lako nani? -----What is your name?
Jina Langu ni -------My name is ......
karibu------- welcome
kwaheri------ good bye

Presents for locals

by Felicityfowkes

Check www.stuffyourrucksack.com. It's a website dedicated to people reporting what was needed in certain areas and people going to these areas.

Don't just hand out things to strangers - especially the 'sweets for children' is a bad thing. We have seen lots of children not going to school any more, because they are more successful begging. It also kills their pride. But giving pencils (in our schools biros were not allowed to be used), sharpeners, erasers to schools is definitely a good thing. If you haven't got any at home, buy them in Kenya -they are cheaper and you also support the local market.

Otherwise, why don't you go and visit a school? I am sure the headmaster can point out some children, who couldn't afford school fees (around 9 pounds/year) or uniforms (around 4 pounds). It's far more rewarding and you have really helped.

Shanzu Beach hotel

by Squinchez

The hotel rooms are located just afew yards from the beach, thus giving a beautiful view of the ocean. and fine breeze and their food! its just delicious whether it be fine dining or just casual quick bite it was just yammy! easpeacilly i like the ''Mishikaki'' small meat of either beef or mutton berbecued in a skewer.
