Bussing from Nairobi to Johannesburg

by SGWKenya

Hey, I'm a charity director from Texas, and I'll be doing field research this June in along eastern Africa for microcredit banking and micro-health insurance. My question is does anyone know the best and cheapest ways to get to Johannesburg from Nairobi (i.e. bussing (yes i know it's not going to be fun) or maybe finding a group to truck with)? Thanks for the time.

Just a thought but check with Overland tours. They have MANY truck/bus tours. Maybe you can cut a deal.

I think it is probably possible to go by bus - but it will take a long time, a lot of logistics to get all the connections and it will certainly be not the most pleasant way of travelling. Flight fare between Nairobi and Johannesburg is about 450 $ with Kenya Airways and takes 4 hours. so if it is just about getting a connection between the two cities.... having to get accomodation, food etc on a busride would certailny hike up your price as well, especially as you can bet there will be delays

Don't think there is a bus company that will take you all the way but you could check out Scandinavia bus who would get you as far as Lusaka. There site should help.

You could always get a train from Dar, the very helpfull man in set 61 has a lot of info.

Travel Tips for Nairobi

Coffee plantations

by grets

Just outside Nairobi we came across a coffee plantation. Being my first visit to sub-Saharan Africa, I was very excited about seen this plant. You take such items for granted back home, coffee comes fully ground in jars from the supermarket, you don't very often stop and think about its origin. The coffee plant grows to the height of 7-8 meters but most of the time the cultivated plants are cut to the height of 2-4 meters to get more width. The leaves of the coffee plant are 10-15 cm long, and the flowers emerge from the branches together with the leaves. The white coffee flower has five petals and a scent resembling that of jasmine. The flowers last only 2-3 days, followed by the berries. Initially they are cherry-sized and green, turning dark red later on. This process takes eight months. The coffee tree can produce flowers and berries at the same time. Harvesting takes place at any time of year, sometimes several times.

Nairobi Tip

My fondest memory was of a town called Machakos. It is about 1 hour southeast of Nairobi. It is a much, much, friendlier atmosphere and the people there were very friendly to me. They have nice little shops for souveniers also. The hotels are very tourist friendly. It will always be a part of me!

Photographing the Masai

by TRimer

While it was once taboo to photograph the Masai, it has become another form of income for them. Expect to pay money to take a photo.

The Maasai are the southern-most Nilotic speakers and are linguistically most directly related to the Turkana and Kalenjin who live near Lake Turkana in west central Kenya. According to Maasai oral history and the archaeological record, they also originated near Lake Turkana. Maasai are pastoralist and have resisted the urging of the Tanzanian and Kenyan governments to adopt a more sedentary lifestyle. They have demanded grazing rights to many of the national parks in both countries and routinely ignore international boundaries as they move their great cattle herds across the open savanna with the changing of the seasons.
