It's a comfortable, not too expensive hotel close to the city centre, but in a very quiet area with lots of trees around it. The outdoor swimming pool is now finished, and they have done quite a job of it. The business centre with four computers is open from 7am to 9pm, and access to the Internet is 15 Shillings per minute.

I've stayed here several times, most recently in January '07. It's not fancy, not entirely 'Western', but is a comfortable and quiet hotel. The staff is attentive, the food is good, and the grounds are great. Also, it gets you out of the mess which is downtown Nairobi.
Nairobi is a pretty edgy place for European or US visitors. This hotel is primarily secure as it sits opposite the Israeli embassy. The road is well known to be the safest in Nairobi and this hotel is correctly described as an oasis of calm in this violent bordering on lawless city. All cars and guests are heavily screened into and out of the property but in Nairobi this is a good thing! Don't go walking in the neibourhood. You will be approached. Do not carry anything remotely valuable someone will attempt to take it. This is an empoverished and sadly corrupt country with collossal natural resources but some very bad hombres running the Police, Government and Businesses.
IN contrast the hotel provides a superb facility to relax or work in. They have an neat gym which given the heat is not very busy. As others have said the pool is superb. The owners are Israeli and they really keep a very good control over the staff who are all immaculately polite. Not common in Africa. They get looked after well so we get a great place to saty. I wouldn't look elsewhere for a Kenyan trip given its location.
I had chosen back in 2006 this hotel to hold an international seminar in June 2007. Now that the seminar is finished, I can confirm the Fariview is just a great place to be in when in Nairobi.
We had about 20 rooms there (book early, as the hotel is often full!) and we also had breakfast and lunch there. We were all uniformy happy. the setting is gorgeous and the staff is really helpful. Security is no problem (well, don't get locked up in a corridor).
It is quite conveniently located and you can be anywhere in town in little time, avoiding some of the worst traffic jams found elsewhere in Nairobi.
Go there before the prices increase ... You may also try their cheaper sister establishment next door (COuntry Lodge) , but it is far less charming.
For one night we stayed in the Fairview hotel in Nairobi – a really excellent little private hotel for a stop over in Nairobi. It isn’t cheap (~£70 per room), but has good security (important in Nairobi), a nice pool, beautiful grounds, good bar, and really excellent restaurants.
The food at the bar is good, the sushi is very good, and the upstairs restaurant is truly exceptional – expensive for Kenya (£20 each without wine), but superb food, very well presented – one of the best meals I have had for a long time. You don’t need a starter as you get a free selection of appetisers anyway, and we got a free tray of handmade chocolates at the end too, after saying we couldn’t manage any of the delicious looking deserts!
The normal rooms are OK but small - for a small increase in price, try to get one of the much better business or first class rooms.
The only thing is that the hotel is on the outskirts of Nairobi, so not convenient if you want to take a look around the city, but perfect if there on business or you just want a stopover for a day or two.
I'd recommend the Fairview to a friend but with caveats. It's pretty, comfortable and secure. Public areas are well-kept and really pleasant, esp. the pool, grounds and fitness centre. Food was usually good but overpriced. While I appreciated the external security, the internal security system - eg., key cards often needed just to move from one part of the hotel to another- was very frustrating b/c, in our experience, the cards often did not work. In some rooms you need a card just to get OUT of the hotel, never mind to get in. We found some front desk staff NOT as helpful as they could have been, often verging on condescending. Perhaps they treat their business travellers better than vacationers. Not an acceptable distinction, in my view. Since others have raised the location as a problem, I should add that for us it was not at all an issue. We walked to and from downtown several times during daylight hours & never felt the least bit threatened or harassed. It's an easy 15-minute walk downhill. Probably wouldn't walk it at night however or as a solo woman. I'd recommend the Fairview but would suggest that the management review the courtesy levels at the front desk. BTW, food & cleaning staff and 'reception' staff - eg luggage storage - were always pleasant.
This is a very good hotel, particularly for Africa. The grounds are beautiful and well-kept. You would barely know you were in a bustling city. We stayed in the annex and the rooms were just fine--nothing spectacular but quite serviceable. The bathrooms were in very good condition. The breakfast was excellent. One small complaint--the double beds are actually two twins pushed together.
I stayed at the Fairview for 2 nights in August 2007. I chose a business class room. The room was clean, the bed comfortable, and breakfast was included in the price of the room. Breakfast was very good with many choices. The rooms have cable TV and large showers. I would definetly stay here again. It's about 30 minutes from the international airport and only 10 minutes from Wilson airport. staff were friendly and courteous. A safe box is located in the room. The business center has ample computers with fast Internet connections.
The Fairview is a super hotel in Nairobi. It's beautifully situated in tropical gardens with a lovely pool area and is spotlessly clean. Have stayed in both business class rooms (which were excellent and well worth the extra), and also in a basic room which was really fine and more than adequate.The business class rooms have direct access to private gardens which are perfect for chilling out after a long flight.
The food is fab , excellent buffet breakfast and very good lunches and dinners. Security is very ,very thorough both to get into the hotel and getting around.
The staff were extremely kind , friendly and welcoming , nothing was too much trouble.
Just a few hints , there is a taxi rank on the premises with fixed prices to all the attractions in Nairobi .It's much better value to book the various excursions on the spot with a taxi driver than to go through an agent and is perfectly safe. Would highly recommend the elephant orphanage for unforgettable encounters with these little cuties and the Nairobi National Park for a lovely introduction to the delights of the other larger parks.
