Female Attire in Kenya
by yt236
Hello!
I'm planning on studying abroad in Nairobi this spring and my program is stressing the importance of below the knee shorts and skirts. How do college age women dress in Nairobi? Would wearing shorts above the knee be inappropriate and what about dressing up for going out at night?
Thanks!

We did not notice any particular dress restrictions in Kenya.
I believe there are even nude beaches in Mombassa - but be prepared for locals to be staring.
Having said that, if you're planning on going on Safari, short shorts are not necessarily the most comfortable due to insects or the sun.
I don't believe exhibitionism needs to be a part of your vacation - although it may be a preference....(I'm not judging).
Our women folk (we traveled with 3) wore comfortable safari shorts during the day or jeans.
When going out to dinner, we followed same rules we would here at home, they dressed nicely at the lodges and restaurants both afield and in Nairobi.

Hello,
You can wear anything in Nairobi, only issue is with say Mini skirts/shorts if you are to go to certain sections of the town (downtown). Normal size shorts, jeans, skirts are ok all parts of Kenya. Not really a big deal.

NAIROBI NATIONAL PARK
The closest Park to the capital, you can spend a morning watching all kind of animals (except elephants; mainly rhinos) with the backdrop of planes landing in nearby airport. Basically savanna or plains, it also includes areas of highland forest, acacia, and riverine environments. Animals can usually be seen near the Mbagathi River and near artificial dams. Take a look at the animal orphanage for good photo chances.
You can take an organized half day tour (there are thousands) or take the bus n°24 from Moi Ave. But if you do the second option, will have to join a car or tour at the entrance, because it is forbidden to enter walking.

Banking Hours
by greekcypriot
Banks are open from Monday to Friday: 09:00-14:00 (16:30 in the major cities). The airport banks are open until midnight every day.
No need to change Euros to US dollars when you go to Kenay.
Euros are mostly welcome.
If you have US dollars check the date of issue. It is very important because no bank will accept US notes with an old issue date (before 2000).
Also don't carry worn out notes. Choose the newest because you might find trouble in changing them.
In case you accidentally have some notes which are really old, try to give them at the airport duty free shops. Pretend that you have no idea about it. They will accept them.
(At least this is what happened to us)!!
Take time to meet ordinary local people !
by greekcypriot
In general people are extremely friendly in Kenya and you will be humbled by their hospitality. But, there is real poverty in Kenya and you will soon realise that you are far richer and more fortunate than most local people you meet.
You will probably attract your fair share of souvenir hawkers and beggars, but try and take the time to meet ordinary people going about their day to day business too. The experience will be worth it. Don't be afraid to step out of that tour bus, just take some precautions.
Gigiri, for rich (and white) people only
by croisbeauty
There is a part of the town where only white people live, actually, it is residential area and all houses are hidden behind high and wired walls. My taxi driver took me there in order to show me this completely different face of Nairobi. Never before in no place I saw so many secutity cars and armed guys around. This part of the town is in a huge contrast with the rest of Nairobi and I didn't like it at all.

Several UN Programmes have offices in Nariobi, such as UNEP with a large compound outside Nairobi. At least on the occasion of international meetings and conferences all the flags flying give a very colorful idea of the many member countries.
