Good value sleeping in Nairobi

Great (4.0 of 5.0 stars)
by written on January 19, 2009

Reasonable hotel in the heart of the "downtown" area of Nairobi. Breakfast can be included or you can do as I do pay 200 bob less and eat wherever and what ever you want instead.

Unique Quality: Always piping hot water' good security (that's important in this part of town), helpfull staff, and they are quite happy to lock up your bags if you travel up country for a while. Even the bar here is reasonable

Hotel Greton website GROSSLY mis-represents itself. Manager unconcerned about thieft. Its a low BUDGET hotel!

Greton (with PO Box55909, not the 444)is located in a seedy & very busy part of Nairobi - ie River Road area - on the edge of the CBD and close to bus terminals. Its a good budget hotel for the price, though very grotty compared to similiar priced much nicer hotels in Mtwapa, Mombasa. Generally the staff are friendly, OK restaurant nextdoor, room+bed are adequate, hot water is a bonus but the shower/toilet really looks grubby.

The webite description and photos on http://www.gretonhotel.com & http://nairoberry.com are a gross mis-represention of reality !!!! The flowers in the single room photo are completely laughable !!! Infact the photos are totally FAKE. I have been using Greton for over 10 years when passing throu Nairobi and the website is a big lie !

Staying at Greton is definately 'slumming it' for sure but good for the budget, many places to drink & eat within walking distance. Pirate DVD CD etc widely available in nearby streets.

The security is good to stop intruders from outside but not so good for the thieves INSIDE. The inside
windows of some rooms can not be locked and rooms easily accessed. A lone internal security guy guards the five floor hotel. Based on personal recent (Feb 2014) experience the management show no interest to reported (to police) thiefts and the two very strongly suspected persons are still working there.

Stay there if you are on a budget but get a room with a lockable inside window, leave no valuables for the staff to steal. Management will not lift a finger to help sort things out.

The photo here at virtual Tourist is not the front of Greton Hotel.
