transport , groceries and souvenirs
by anujsingh
Will be visiting Nairobi reaching afternoon . Is there a reasonably priced and reliable public transport to the city from the airport ? What are the major departmental stores where we can buy milk , bread etc ? Which is the best place in Nairobi to buy small souvenirs like T shirts , fridge magnets etc ? thanks for your efforts and best wishes

There is public transport from the airport to the city centre and it's cost is reasonable. But due to security of the place where the Bus {well known here as the Matatu}drop you i would recommend you take a cab which is only USD20.
About groceries you can get the from NAKUMMAT SUPERMARKETS which have branches in most parts of the town and you can find almost everything there.
Welcome to Kenya.

Hello,
The comments by flyrubi are straight to the point.
Possibbly take a taxi from the Airport and request them to take you to Nakumatt, Uhuru Highway, which is on the way to town and has ample parking and all the items that you are looking for. It also has a shop with african craft (too expensive though). All the other items you are looking for are availablle in this supermarket and very well priced.
Regards,
John.

there is a bus heading from the airport to the city center, but while the price is low, it is not really a safe option. You´d be better off investing in a taxi. Plus, if you stay anywhere outside the city center, yu would have to switch busses and matatus anyhow and without knowing your way around the place that could be tricky. If you need groceries, head for ine of the big supermarket chains - Nakumatt, Chandarana or Uchumi. They are either located in the main shopping malls (where you can also browse for souvenirs) or have shops in the city center or along Mombasa Road. If you want to buy t-shirts and other souvenirs, you can either ho to the One Way shops in the shopping malls or (cheaper options) browse the shops in Biashara Street. Haria has a good selection of different items, but there are a lot of other shops with textiles and souvenirs in the area as well. You can also go to city market, but you have to know about the correct prices then as you need to haggle, and when you are a foreigner, the merchants will try to rip you off

If you are arriving at night, then you have to get a taxi. If in the day time, it's still advisable. They don't call it Nairobbery for nothing. Better to pay a few extra shillings than get dropped off from the Matatu in the wrong part of town.
As for souvenir shopping, we went to the market in the town, but whereever you go, the story will be the same. As you ask the price of things, you will be told "hakuna matata, I make a good price for you" and you'll put all your things into a basket, then you'll be told a price for the lot, which is about 10 times more than you were expecting. You'll haggle hard, they'll talk to you like you're insulting them and you'll eventually give in at 5 times more than you wanted to pay.
There are plenty of places to buy souvenirs, but be very clear about how much you think an item is worth. When they ask for more than that, tell them no or laugh and put it back. It's hard work, but it's the only way to avoid being ripped off.
Travel Tips for Nairobi
The Carnivore a Restaurant on...
by cosmopolit
The Carnivore a Restaurant on the outskirts of Nairobi which features game on the menu. Actually there's not really a menu. Choice of starters and after that you'll receive carvings of all sorts of game straight from skewer onto your plate until you burst.. Settings in the garden are quite nice, feels like being somwhere in the middle of the bush. If it gets nippy they bring out these charcoal heathers on posts placed around the tables. Just good fun to end a trip to Africa. Communications systems work... and then there are the fabulous spacey black Londontaxis to get around...

Global Museum
by croisbeauty
Global Museum is situated in a walking distance to Holiday Inn hotel where I stayed during my three days visit to Nairobi. It happened that I passed there only by chance and was attracted by its look, which is in a shape of bursting flower. It was about 8:00 AM and the musuem was still closed. My intention was to come back and visit it later in a day but honestly I forgot it.
Eastleigh

If you are interested in the contemporary culture and life of the large Somali diaspora in Kenya, you should try to visit this neighbourhood. Local Kenyans already fear just the name of this part of town, where indeed you can find anything from fake Somali ID cards to real guns, but during daytime the souk is also an original shopping place with colourful tissues and daily arrivals of new refugees. If you know someone from Somalia he or she will be happy to show you around. It is a unique occasion to learn to know a very particular people, proud and independent minded. But certainly here: keep your eyes open and be back home at dark!!
