During a 17-day Kenya trip that included photo-safaris in five game parks, we also stayed in three Nairobi hotels. The Norfolk was far-and-away our favorite.
Built in 1904, the hotel hosted Theodore Roosevelt a few months after he left the U S presidency in 1909. Many other famous guests have stayed here -- and one now infamous: a Muslim terrorist blew up a wing of the hotel in 1980.
Room rates at the Norfolk keep escalating. As last I knew a double ran US$305 a night.
Scenes in the filmed version of "White Mischief" were shot in the hotel -- and many of the incidents depicted in the book and movie took place in the Norfolk.
Single/double rooms are small but well- appointed and very comfortable; they're air conditioned with all the usual top-drawer amenities.
There are five or six restaurants -- the Lord Delamere serving gourmet cuisine -- with food service also at the nice-sized pool.
A business center, conference facilities, and a health spa are also available.
