    Panafric

    by

The hotel is okay and is a medium range hotel just out of the CBD and on the corner of Uhuru park. The hotel includes a reasonably good restaurant and pool plus business centre and plenty of conference rooms. The staff were really friendly and security very good with guards sited on each floor to protect guests.

    Transit hotel

Stayed several times in this rather dated hotel. Rooms are okay, restaurant area is okay, reception is quick and friendly, swimmingpool big but cold. Breakfast is good. A lot of safari parties start or end their safari here.

Unique Quality: The bar is the nicest part of the hotel. Always busy, many nationalities, always someone to chat with.

    Very good restaurant

Can't say much about this accomodation because I never stayed over night in this hotel. However, its location is very attractive, not far from the city centre and yet in a very peacefull area. It dominates on a small hill, surrounded by the greenery, and offering nice view at the busy city centre.

Unique Quality: Besides tranquility, Panafric hotel offers very good restaurant. I was here with a friend of mine during her break for a lunch. She ordered grilled steak and chips while I followed waitress's suggestion ordering tilapia filets. The food was exceptionally good, as well as wine. Lunch for two cost me something less than 3000 kes.

    Friendly staff

I stayed a few nights in Panafric in August 2005. The room we had was nice and clean. We were staying in 5th floor and had a nice view of the city. The service in the restaurant was very good and the staff extremely friendly. We had our luggage stored during our travelling in Kenya and Tanzania. The hotel has taxis that took us downtown and picked us up again.

    Unique Quality: Very friendly staff.

    An oasis in the city

First a word of warning: we have not stayed in the Panafric Hotel since 1986 and many things may have changed since then. I can only base my tips on my experience at that time.

Great view from our balcony over Kenyatta Avenue with its flowering Jacaranda trees, and further to Nairobi in the distance.

Nice swimming pool area where you can relax inbteween excursions.

Excursion desk in lobby where you can arrange many different trips to the various attractions in the area, as well as day and overnight safaris to the national parks of Kenya.

Unique Quality: All rooms are Air-conditioned, with private balconies, direct dial telephone, en suite bathrooms with shower and WC, 24 hours room service, satellite TV with 10 channels (CNN included), mini-bars, non smoking rooms, hairdryers, coffee maker and alarm clock. Other services include concierge, free parking, bar and restaurant, safety deposit box, lounge and coffee shop, 24 hour room service, Jacuzzi, sauna, conference facilities, laundry and dry-cleaning services.

hilton:
good value , rooms are pretty good best if you can get a room near the pool. however pool can be cold in july and august. Food in the hilton is excellent and a good tip is to buy sandwiches in their sandwich bar and bring them to the area around the pool, much better and much cheaper than the pool area grill, the stanley is the best value hotel in nbo. everything is first class rooms service pool . Except food not as good as hilton Intercon is overrated and overpriced as is the safari pk. Stay in the Stanley

Help getting from airport to hotel in Nairobi

by jimb09

Hello everyone,

I am flying into Nairobi from LAX this saturday arriving early in the morning around 7am and am wondering if I can get advice about transportation from the airport to my hotel. I am staying at Sarova Panafric in Nairobi. I have read mixed reviews, should I make an advanced booking for a taxi or just wait to get there and find a taxi?

Also, I will be in Nairobi all day saturday and leaving sunday morning for Arusha, what could anyone recommend I do for my full day and evening in Nairobi? What are some must see things to do that are easily accessible from downtown for a first time visitor?

Thanks for all of the input!!

Jimmie

Hello,

I am Kenyan living and working in Nairobi.

Not much issue with Taxi at the Airport, plenty available and reliable. On arrival you will find various stands where you can request for taxi services. Try say Kenatco taxis or Jamco taxis.

A full day in Nairobi, you can spend some time at the animal orphanage, they have a nice restaurant there - Ranchers Restaurant. You may also visit the Nairobi Museum. Various shopping malls like Yaya and Village Market and Sarit are also interesting. There is also a Masai Market at the City Centre, next to the Highcourt where they sell various african craft on Saturdays.

Evening - depends on what you like, if its say a nice dinner, you may go to the fairview hotel, few metes from the Panafric or also the Palacina Hotel (bit expensive) but worth the visit. Night clubs are also available - Florida 2000 (Madhouse) on Koinange Street is a very lively place. There are also several nice clubs in the westlands area. You may also vist the Carnivore for some nice dinner and dance.

Let me know if you need more help of any sort. - swiftltd@yahoo.com.

Also if you need a guide do let me know.

Regards,

John.

I will echo what others have said: Kentaco has relatively fair rates. I paid 300 Ksh to go from the Aiport to a hotel off of Mama Ngina st downtown. The Sarova is just a bit further from the center of town, up near Sattelite. Remember you can always haggle a price if someone names something rediculous like 1,000 ksh. The most I would pay would be 600 Ksh, or around $5-10 US.
