Camping in the heart of the city

Just up the road from the huge slum of Kibera is a walled compound.

Inside is a large 1920's house and a huge, green garden, not what you might expect to find.

You can camp here in your own tent for around 1500 KS, or use their tents for a little more. There is also the option of deluxe tents with ensuite bathroom (hot shower).

The cost is 5000 KS for a double and can be pre-booked by email or through hostelbookers.

Unique Quality: The deluxe tent is very comfortable, but might get a little chilly in winter.

The breakfast is simple but you can pay a little more to add extras such as english style sausages.

During the day you can order lovely food cooked to order, and in the evening, 7500 KS buys you into the fantastic buffet.

The Australian owners are very friendly as are their dogs and child.

They can organise tours of the city, flights, buses etc. They also have an array of good priced souveniers.

The only downside is that just outside the compound is a rather loud bar that plays dance music (on weekends certainly) until the early hours. However, this was not too loud to ruin my sleep.

To sum it up, I loved staying here and it was a nice relaxation after 2 weeks in dusty East Africa.

Taxi

by boltonian

Taxis are plentiful if Nairobi.

Negotiate the fee before setting off.

Best to ask a hotel/cafe etc to call a taxi for you to ensure a reputable, safe and fair priced taxi.

Cost from downtown to the International airport should be around 1500-1700 KS

From downtown to a hotel such as Wildebeest Camp, expect to pay 400-500 KS
Most drivers seem to have perfect English

Hostel in Nairobi

by jobeyjobe

Another volunteer and I are teaching basketball skills as a way to educate teenagers about HIV/AIDS awareness. Last year we stayed with host family and wish to stay in a hostel this time around. Is there a nice hostel somewhere near Nakumatt Junction? Thank you!

In October I stayed at the Wildebeest Camp, which is located at the junction of Kibera Road and Ngong Road. They offer budget accommodation as well as a tented camp, and they have a very friendly, easy-going atmosphere.
