Tortillis Camp - Overbooked and Uncaring

    by

While this Cheli & Peacock owned property is considered one of the finest in Amboseli, we can NOT recommend it. The facility, service, and amenities are admittedly quite good. However, the management attitude and response is quite poor. Our small private safari had booked 3 rooms for 4 nights a year in advance. Our travel agent had confirmations. On arrival we realized we were only checked in for 3 nights. It seems that a much larger group had been overbooked after our booking. However, the management simply forced us out after 3 nights in preference to the larger group. Finding another hotel in Amboseli is not simply a matter of walking down the street. The manager never once talked to us again during the 3 days even though he was aware of the overbooking and the situation. We had to make other arrangements on short notice through our own travel agent.
After we returned home our travel agent had extensive discussions with the owner of Cheli & Peacock who refused any compensation other than one night's rental.
The management, attitude, and responsiveness of Cheli & Peacock is unconscionable for a supposed upscale property.

Driving times in Kenya/Tanzania

by Steve007NY

We're currently making final decisions about an all-drive trip circling the 'great reserves' of Kenya and Tanzania.

I know weather (we're going in 2 weeks, short rain season) and such make it hard to say, but anyone with Driving distances/times on the route would be MOST welcome (or a website/source)

Nairobi-Amboseli (Tortilis camp)
Amboseli-Tanangire (Treetops)
Tanrangire-Ngorongoro (Serena Lodge)
Ngorongoro-Serengeti (Serena Lodge)
THE TOUGH ONE>>Serngeti-Isbenia border crossing-Masa Mara
Masa Mara-Nairobi

THANKS!!!

I don't know if that's much help but I've driven from Nairobi to Amboseli a couple of times 4-5 years back. If I remember correctly, the driving time was about 4.5 hours. The road from Nairobi to Namanga was not bad, but from Namanga to Amboseli it was a very bumpy gravel road. On one of our trips it started raining on our second day in Amboseli and it was amazing how quickly all the roads turned into muddy rivers. I am sure you know to avoid driving in the dark, so don't leave too late. Maybe if you check out the websites of some travel agents, you will get some idea of the driving times for the other parts of the trip?
Cheers.
