Troglodyte Lodge: Going underground
In the village of Rayehbet, we stayed in a traditional troglodyte lodge, now converted to tourist accommodation. There were six rooms in total, and two seperate bathrooms for male and female. A dining room served traditional Berber food.
Unique Quality: The lodge was built into the side of a hill, with a 'normal' house at the front. Just behind was a courtyard cut out of the hillside, accissible by a flight up stairs leading up the side of the hill and then back down again into the courtyard.
From the courtyard, a tunnel would lead into the hill with bedrooms set off this corridor. The rooms were hewn out of the rock with a domes roof and the beds were also cur from stone.
It got very cold during the night, but the blankets provided enough warmth for it to be comfortable (I did sleep with my fleece, a hat and gloves on)
Electricity was provided, but the lights blew when one of our party tried to plug her travel kettle in. They did however come back just in time for us to retire to bed.
