The Sleeping Camel: Bamako's best backpacker haven

by Natalie_Infinite

The sleeping camel is no doubt the place to be in Bamako/Mali. Not only do they have a very relaxing oasis in the dusty busy city of Bamako they provide amazing food (everyone who has been to Mali or any other West African country knows that good food Western/European style is a lack!) and cold (in many other places there is no refridgerators) beers and drinks!!
But the best is the connections you get there: It's Number 1 hangout for any other backpackers, travelers, and the owners Matt and Bill have lived there for long time and get you everything what you need to have. Help with visas for other countries, trips to anywhere in the country, etc. Unfortunately at the very moment the north of Mali is in war - I cross my fingers for this beautiful country and for the Sleeping Camel and all my friends there!!

Pool, cold drinks, cheap dorms and affordable twins. outstanding hospitality, best connections in Mali!

Hotel L'Auberge, Segou: Perfect Oasis

by marysusie

When I first went to Mali I didn't know a soul. I got off the bus from Bamako and landed in Segou. It's the second biggest city in Mali but feels more like a small town. When I found the Auberge I was thrilled. Africa can create a lot of Mayhem, especially in Bamako, but in Segou and particularly at this hotel, I was given the chance to totally relax. The rooms were spacious and clean. There is a lovely garden/dining area and a pretty pool to swim in. It made all the difference. I felt totally revived. The hotel is well situated. Very close to the Niger river. The Monday market is just a few streets away. I LOVE this town and LOVE this hotel. Oh... and it's not expensive. I guess when I was there it was around $40. TOTALLY worth it.

La Coccinelle: Great Boutique Hotel

by Diverdan28

La Coccinelle is a relatively new hotel located on the Route de Koulikoro, close to the Hippodrome. I stayed in the original portion of the hotel which has several suites. My room was comfortably furnished, had a small but stocked kitchenette, satellite TV, and separate air con in the living and sleeping areas. The wifi was a bit slow but reliable. The staff are very helpful and friendly and will do their best to meet any specific requirements. The price was exceptionally resonable for this part of the world. They have a small pool which is kept amazingly cool. The adjoining restauant offers a wide menu, and the meals I had there were exceptionally good. There is a small but well stocked Mini-Market close by on the other side of Koulikoro Road, and an open air fruit market also close by. Taxis to several good restaurants are easily found and with a bit of negotiation, are very cheap. I would not hesitate to stay here again, or to recomend to others.

Mac's Refuge.: Sevaré - An American in Mali.

by pfsmalo

A great stay to be had here. Mac is an American that was born to protestant missionnaries in Sangha. Each bedroom is named after an ethnic group and decorated in that style. He seems to be a very good cook as well, although he now has a Malian cook to help out. Every evening the menu changes from Mexican to American to Moroccan, never the same on the 7 days in a week costing 5.000 cfa (7.50 euros).

Double ventilated rooms are priced at 18.000 cfa (27.50 euros) with own WC and shower.
Dormitory rooms are at 7.000 cfa per bed.
Vehicles (3) can be accomodated inside the gates that are closed at 23.00h unless prior arrangements are made with staff.

The sumptuous breakfast is included in the price of the rooms.

Catholic mission.: Segou - clean and basic.

by pfsmalo

A nice, quiet place away from the bustle of the town, although you'll need transport to go anywhere. Rooms are clean with mozzie nets and a small shower with cold water. W.C.'s are communal, but plenty of them.

A double room (2 single beds) cost 9000 cfa (13.5 euros).
No breakfast but can be had at the small place just across the road from the entrance.

Complexe culturel Jamana.: Nioro du Sahel

by pfsmalo

Another one of those places you can't get away from!!! The personnel were friendly enough but there is the Radio Jamana throbbing constantly. Yep, this is the local radio station and they have rooms behind. A wedding party appeared from nowhere at 1 in the morning and kept going 'til 3. Sleep after was a waste of time.

At 9000 cfa for the double room we got done. Breakfast of brea, butter and jam was included though.

Sleeping on top

by SirRichard

A good option for sleeping in Mali (if it doesn't rain) is to sleep on the roof. Most hotels offer this possibility, which could be cooler than a room with fan. You can always use the common showers and WC downstairs.
Prices vary from 5 to 9 euros. A matress is sometimes supplied and your own sleeping bag is advisable. Put some mosquito lotion just in case.

Bouctou Hotel (Timbuktu)

by SirRichard

Timbuktu hasn't got a lot of hotels to choose, in spite of its legendary name amongst travellers. One of the best medium-range places is the Bouctou Hotel, in the limits of the desert. They have 2 buildings, well decorated tough simple including breakfast, and the staff is really friendly. They can organise trips with the touaregs and trips to the Niger river villages too.
About 20 euros for a room with fan.
