A cruise with working schooner
by ZenLady34
This was something that we really were looking forward: a cruise with the Isla Mauricia, which is claimed to be the oldest active working schooner in the world! It is build in 1852 and now operates only for cruises.
Unfortunately we could not make it because of the weather but I hope that you will make it.
The cruise is offered by Yacht Charters and also almost every tour operator in Grand Baie has it on their list. We found out that the tour operators did not want to sell the Isla Mauricia cruises but instead they tried to sell their catamaran trips to the close islands! Nah, would they be as great as the working shooner? I dont think so.
Anyway Isla Mauricia does cuises with snorkelling, lunch and with Sega (traditional music) for around 1950Rs. Everything included.
Since we had trouble booking the ship from the local tour operators (Keiffel Tours, Northview Tours) we decided to search the Yacht Charters office and book it directly from there. The office was hard to find as it did not say Yach Charters anywhere but it had ISLATAVERN written on the sign outside!
We could have booked the trip but they go out (sailing) only on Thurdays and Saturdays from Grand Baie, and we left on Thursday :-(
According to their website they do offer kayaking and diving.
A jewel in the Indian Ocean

"What A Lovely Island"
We stayed in Grand Baie at the La Mauricia, a far cry from the poor hotels claiming similar star ratings in the mediterranean. The suite was impressive with a superb jacuzzi bath, loungers on the grass outside, and the beach in the photo only a few steps from our terrace.
"Local Town Life"
The local town is an eclectix mix of african, indian/asian and European cultures. There is a KFC serving the colonels finest, as well as fish and speciality asian restaurants. Shopping is a mix of the touristy malls type shops in the main street, to the amazing local shops and markets that can be found in the back streets.
"A stroll on the seafloor"
This is an absolute must do. You go out by boat, sit an upside down fish tank with a set of pipes on to your head, and climb off the back of a boat. Absoluteley unbelieveable.

Le Mauricia or La Plantation?
by aesculusglabra
What have your expereiences at these places? Which one would you prefer?
RE: Le Mauricia or La Plantation?

both hotels are good
big different
La Plantation:
far away from all, no shop, no bus, you need a taxi to leave the hotel.
Le Mauricia: small beach, in the narrow bay of Grand Baie,
but in 5 min wlking distance: you are i the center, with bus, bank, shops,
restaurnats, bars
best regards annerose

I also face the same dilemma. I would like to stay near the shops and restaurents. But, Le Mauricia is much more expensive. If I stay in La Plantation would taxis be available to go to Grand Bay area and what would be the cost?

Le Mauricia (Beachcomber Hotels)
by pierre.lima
Hello,
I'm planning a one week holiday in Mauritius starting on next October 2nd.
Would very much like to hear about other travellers opinions concerning Le Mauricia (Beachcomber Hotels).
I only know that Grand Baie is a nice village to stay, plenty of animation.
Thanks in advance !
