Shandrani Hotel: The best All Inclusive

by Blanula

This hotel is very close to the airport and if you do not like planes, you may be bothered by the noise. The planes take off/land few times per day and as you can see the end of the runway from the beach, you may not like it. I love watching planes, so this did not bother us at all. However it may become a problem in the future as we were told that the airport is expanding to allow many more flights.

This is the best all inclusive that we have ever had. Everything was included (apart from some special wines and other things, which we did not think of using anyway). You can have champagne for breakfast, lunch and dinner if you wish. There is water skiing, glass bottom boat trips, golf, diving.... you will not get bored. We borrowed bikes one day which was nice.

The rooms are good size but if you are quieter people (as we are) try to get a room from 150 upwards. We had a room in block 2 (rooms 21-28), it is immediately behind the hut which sells boat trips, and the boys there like to have their music on in the morning. There is beautiful beach between blocks 17-18, it is small with only maybe 12 sun loungers and the snorkelling was very good. When we got there around 9AM we always managed to find place there.

The food was amazing. One of the best we have ever tasted and the dessert station - you have to see it to believe it :o)

Our favourite restaurant was Le Boucanier – the gourmet / fish restaurant, it is set menu of 4 courses. The food was beautifully presented, the portions were spot on and the service was very professional. The Italian restaurant was our second best. Le Sirius food was OK, hubby had the beef, which he enjoyed, but my pasta was horrible. I seriously could not eat it – and I am not fussy person. The sauce was supposed to be cream but it was very bitter and not enjoyable. We were looking forward the Thai restaurant but the 10 course set menu has some very spicy dishes and the portions are very big for such a large menu. We did not even managed to have half of the main courses (4) and we left without having any dessert. For the rest of our holiday we eat in the Buffet restaurant. What can I say? It was fantastic! Great choice of food, their bread is to die for and the choice of sweets was unbelievable. The bars were great. No restriction on labelled spirits and a good choice of cocktails.

Service was hit and miss. It purely depended on who served you.

It is in an isolated location so anywhere you want to go, you have to take a taxi or hire a car. The ‘lagoon’ is very good for snorkelling. I am not a good swimmer but as the water is not very deep, I was snorkelling for hours.

All in all we had a good time in Shandrani. We went for a taxi ride around the south of Mauritius. We visited waterfalls and coloured sands. It was enjoyable day out to see something else apart from the hotel grounds.

Constance Le Prince Maurice: Luxury on the Lagoon

by janiebaxter

Constance Le Prince Maurice is a 5 star luxury hotel set in 60 hectares of gardens, beach and mangrove reserve. It is 45 km from the airport and 35 km from Port Louis.
It is named after Prince Maurice of Orange and of Nassau who pioneered the discovery of spices and particularly nutmeg – which is the hotel's logo.
The room itself was lovely – very spacious and beautifully furnished with a huge comfy bed and everything you would expect from this standard of hotel, including an apple mac with internet connection and a wide screen TV/monitor.
The bathroom was really good with a separate big walk in shower, 2 basins and a very big, deep bath as well as plenty of mirrors and lots of storage space.
I particularly liked the way the hotel is very open. All the restaurants and public areas have open sides to let the breeze through so no need for the awful A.C.

Sports Facilities include gym, tennis and golf and there is also a Spa.
Free Watersports include water skiing, windsurfing pedalos and snorkelling.
The hotel boat leaves at 2pm every day for a snorkelling trip to the reef, which is about 10 to 15 minutes away. They provide snorkels, masks, fins, towels and water. We went most days as we really enjoyed it. The same boat goes out for a glass bottom boat trip every morning.
Kayaks can be taken out from the hotel, either into the sea or the permitted area of the mangroves.

The beach is good – not the best I have been to but very nice, and of course swept and cleaned every morning. The swimming area is roped so boats cannot enter but can be a bit too shallow at low tide. Sunbeds are on the beach, with thatched shades and water is complimentary on the beach. They also bring round fruit and cold flannels for refreshment frequently throughout the day. The pool area is not as good as the beach. The pool itself is fine but we found the service not so good at the pool and there are not enough sunbeds.
There are boutiques, a library and business centre and the concierges can organise trips and taxis but we did not find them very informative about trips so we organised our own.
There are 2 restaurants which I will cover in separate tips – Le Barachois and L’Archipel and 2 hotel bars as well as a fitness bar. We mostly used the lounge bar for pre-dinner drinks which was very nice and comfortable with good service and a good, if expensive, cocktail menu.

There are just two negatives to bear in mind. As this is a luxury meals are very expensive. We were on half board so filled up at breakfast and didn’t bother with lunch. However on the last day we needed lunch before we went to the airport. Two main courses and 2 beers came to over £70! The hotel is very isolated in its own grounds so if you want to explore or eat out you have to book a taxi or a trip which can work out expensive.

Our room was on stilts with a balcony overlooking the fish reserve, accessed by a wooden walkway through the mangrove trees. We fed the fish in the lagoon from our balcony each day.
The location too was lovely. You approach down a very long driveway with palm trees and agricultural land on each side of the drive. The pool and restaurant face the beach and the sea. To the right is the main beach leading around the small headland and the reef. To the left is the mangrove reserve, my favourite bit! This area had wooden walkways over the mangroves leading to Le Barachois restaurant and to the rooms over the reserve. La Barachois has to be one of the best locations I have ever eaten in. Here we would see many beautiful birds and watch all the fish in the water below while dining.

Paradise Cove Hotel & Spa: Quality boutique hotel

by fafnir82

I wanted to stay in a boutique hotel for a change and after some searching around, found the Paradise Cove hotel website. I liked their website and decided to try it.

Firstly, the website does not reveal a lot of information about the hotel. I thought it was of a lower standard than other regular 5 star hotels (since Paradise Cove is a 5 star hotel too, albeit a boutique one), but it is actually an excellent hotel. It's more suited to couples, I feel, because the oriental themed setting it relies on makes it a more intimate kind of place but I guess some families may prefer something more standard. Just keep in mind that if you're traveling with kids, Paradise Cove may not be the best choice.

However, if you are going on honeymoon or going on a romantic holiday, Paradise Cove is ideal. The rooms are extremely cozy, the hotel has 3 restaurants which serve multicultural food, and the hotel is located near the coast with a short walk to its own private beach. There are other facilities such as sports, etc...but I personally did not care for these. The hotel has a great pool though, but between the pool and the Mauritius beach, I know where my choice list.

The hotel is fairly cheap compared to other big name hotels and it's thus a great alternative for those traveling on a budget. It is also believe to be among the finest spas in Mauritius, but I did not try it out. You get a free 30 minute session with your booking (I'm not sure if this was a special offer or something they do all the time) but I did not try it out.

Le Meridian Ile Maurice: Book with Caution

by archerchef

Book your stay here with caution. We stayed here 4 April to 10 April 2010 and are lukewarm to this property. Location is good on the beach. Facility is worn however well maintained in compared to other facilities. Hidden charges, food service, and the restaurants are very well below par.

This hotel is set up for what we call the bus trade. That is tour groups and people who book all inclusive meal plans. That means the food is uninspired and expensive. Expect to pay for everything not in the contract; water in the room, water at the pool, etc.

There are the free activities as advertised, water skiing, sailing etc. Equipment is limited, aged, and low end. Expect long lines for everything, including paid activities.

The 110 Restaurant is the main dining room, no reservation needed. Food mediocre at best. As with "all inclusive" the food is bulk, mostly cold and heavy with inexpensive fillers and salt. The salt is used to increase ones beverage consumption. Expect 330RP for a medium bottle of water, 550Rp for a beer, dont even think of a mixed drink.

Lacroque/Cummin Expensive bar food during the day, decent Indian Buffet at night. Reservations needed. Estimate 1300Rp per person before beverages. Beverages same price as 110.

Shells, it is on the beach. Daytime lunch buffet 600RP with beverages prices higher than 110 & Cummin. Evening should be ala Carte however most nights it has been set Menus. Cost 1100 m- 1300 Rp per person before beverages.

Pool Bar, no food expensive beer and bad cocktails only
La Faya, best restaurant on property. Expensive and few small menus.

The hotel has no beach, pool, bar food service. They expect you to be on a meal plan, or pay through the nose for bad food at la Faya.

No where to buy small snacks on premise. One must walk off premise, or cab it into Grand Baie. this is the best solution.

We have found in our stay it is better to pay the cab 1300Rp (return), go into Grand Baie and eat dinner. Even with tip, beverages, taxi we come out for three people 1500 to 1600 per person to the good. We also have found the meals to be better.

We have stayed at many luxury resort over the years. This is the biggest disappointment. We have stayed at other Le Meridians; Split, Delhi, France x 4, Berlin, etc. Even the ones in North Africa do not abuse their customers this bad.

The beach is lovely. Yes there are stone shoals appearing, it happens in this part of the world on volcanic isles. Expect it and you will not be dissappointed
