Things in or around Agadir?

by gooseberryjam

I'm going to Agadir in April with my boyfriend for 7 days. Neither of us have a drivers licence so we wont be able to rent a car. Is there any nice places close enough around the town that you could get to by bus? Is there things to do in the town itself?

Thanks!

Agadir is basically a beach resort, with a lot of hotels. Essaouira and Tarroudant are two of the nicest towns in the area and both can be reached by bus.

why use a bus or car when you have cabs on each street corner. and they're soooooo cheap!

Grand taxis. They are a faster, but definitely more uncomfortable than the inter-city buses. An individual taxi? Forget it - rip-off. Try all of the options (I did), then say which you preferred.

You could get a shared taxi (in preference to grand taxi) from El Batwaar and have this all to yourself. As always, you need to ask the price and maybe haggle a bit but generally speaking the shared taxis are far better value but not at all comfortable.
Essaouira is a lovely place but the bus (2.5 hour journey) only goes once a day at about 8:30am from the Gare de Autobus (bus station) near Souk al Had. The fare is 60Dh one way and you can only get a return ticket once there so get this immedialtely on arrival. The bus back to Agadir departs at about 4:15pm and although it doesn't sound long, this is enough time to explore, shop and have lunch.
Other popular places are Taroudant, en-route you will see the famour tree climbing (or "flying") goats, Tiznit and Tafraout will include a trip up into the mountains with marvellous views.
In Agadir you must go up the kasbah (fortress) where you will have panoramic views of Agadir and the Atlantic Ocean.

Skip Agadir! think!! what else?? use CTM buses;it's so comfortable. Taxis are known by charging tourists more then what locals pay for such a ride.
(as they say: Bargain! make a deal -then- go).

have a look around the Travel guide pages made by VTers - myself included - for suggested places to visit and then just go - as already said there are buses and shared taxis - or you could rent a grande taxi for a day with driver - not so expensive about 500 dirham plus lunch for the driver - any more than that then definitely haggle - the circuit to Tafroute and Tiznit is lovely.

Travel Tips for Agadir

Reconstruction and expanding of the Corniche

by sachara

When I visited Agadir in the summer of 2007 there were huge works going on reconstructing and expanding the corniche further south of the Place al Wahda (picture 5). On the beach you could have a look at the huge billboards (picture 1) to see how it will look like as the work is finished and new palmtrees are planted.

In summer 2007 you could allready walk over the rough paved area (picture 2 and 4). More south it looked like a new broad entrance from the Boulevard du 20 Aout (picture 3) will be made like the of actual one more north of the Place al Wahda.

I think it will be great to walk along this expanded corniche in the close future, with a bit of shade during the day and a marvellous view at the ocean and the sunset in the evening.

Drive out to Imouzzer

by angiebabe

Its a stunning drive out to Imouzzer - it was thoroughly great to drive myself out along this lovely drive since my previous visits with 2 nights here 5 years ago - reminiscing and reminding myself of the impressive to dramatic sights of the oases and gorges and valleys with homes perched on cliffsides and riders on donkeys making long journeys home up the steep climbs along this route.

At the end of this route are the cascades gushing down from the top of the mountains on high. In summer this place is a busy haven from the heat and a popular place to visit for locals from Agadir. Including a popular annual honey festival at the end of August which I managed to get to those years ago - along with a 3am in the morning dragging up onto the stage for a photo with the apparently famous woman singer there!

And for a second time Ive watched a man dive from about 30 feet above down into a small pool below my feet - the first time was gut wrenching mind boggling and the second time knowing that its done many times over hoping nothing went wrong in front of me!

And its a place that intrepid tourists who want more than a package holiday with a week on the beaches around Agadir can add to their itinerary when renting a car to see the surrounding sights.

Village in the mountains

by sachara

During our tour with the landrover we went with a donkey from the wadi to a small village in the mountains north east of Tiznit.

The village was very picturesque with its houses built between the rocks. Under one of the rocks we saw an oven. Some villagers were very curious and came welcoming us, others were a little bit more shy.

See my travelogue for more.

Quays of the port of Agadir

by sachara

In the port of Agadir it's great to walk along the quays and to look at the fishingboats in the morning. At the quays you can see a lot of heaps of red-coloured fishing nets. I like it to watch all these activities in the harbour.

After our walk we went inside the halls to have a look at the catch of the day. Lots of fish including some small sharks.

Amazighe heritage museum

by sachara

The Amazighe heritage museum or le Musée Municipal de Patrimoine Amazighe shows a variety of Berber heritage from the region of Souss Massa Draa. Except the pieces of traditonial jewellery you can see all kind of objects of daily life like carpets, pottery and wooden doors.

At the first floor is a library wher you can have a look at lots of interesting books of the local culture. A pity that the desk was closed at saturday during my visit.

Opening hrs: 9.30am till 5.30 pm
Entrance fee: 20 dirham, kids 10 dirham
