Re: Guides in Asilah, Morocco

by carberry

My husband is from Asilah, we were married there last year, and I know this person. I would advise both male and female tourists to steer clear of him, but especially females. He comes across as very nice, but he has a hidden agenda and that is 'money' and 'papers'. Mind you that is quite common. He is not a thief I hasten to add, I would not think he would steal, not at all - but he is a con-man who makes his money from tourists. There is also another guide to avoid, and his name is Mohammed, and has prematurely greyed hair. He is a drug addict, and absolutely not to be trusted. Best thing if you go to Asilah, stay at Hotel Sahara, very reasonable, and clean, and eat in one of the many reasonable priced restaurants around the medina walls. Don't get caught up in renting apartments unless you negotiate your own deal (no more that 80-90 dirhams a night each). Dont go to the nightclub at Hotel Haima, it is just a brothel where you will be overcharged for drinks and cigarettes. If you want to buy beer or wine, there is a shop opposite Rue Hassan open from about 6.00pm to 9.00pm where you can buy cheap. Hotel Las Palmas is also a knocking shop so avoid if you are female. If you want to take a grand taxi to or from Tangier - Asilah, look for a shared taxi, in Tangier pick up one from the bus station. Dont take one for just yourself - it will cost loads. If you share it works out about 20dirham each.
