Sahara Inn "Auberge Sahara" is an hotel built on the edge of Erg Chebbi dunes by Bourchok brothers. The hotel is located on the most well-known and attractive oasis in the region of Merzouga owing to its special characteristics of having the highest dates palm trees and to be the preferred site for quite a lot of international movies like "The Secret of Sahara", "Marrakech Express",...

The dunes of Merzouga, Erg Chebbi Dunes are a natural oasis which by word means a remote area of vegetation in a desert, usually nearby a natural spring or water source. Ancient stories tell that the creation of the biggest dunes of Morocco, Erg Chebbi, come up by God's punishment of local wealthy families that although having a festivity eating couscous, meat, fruit, washing hands with milk, while having a prosper and enormous feast, refused to help a poor woman and her children and let them come into the party. From that time on and until the dunes got their permanent form, continuous sand storms and extreme heat brought sand at what are today's serene dunes of Erg Chebbi, that arrive at its highest point at 160m altitude. In the summer this is the ideal place to relax in the shade or alleviate yourself from rheumatism with a sand hot bath, where you stay covered by pure sand for a few moments.

The highest palm trees in the region
The highest dates palm trees of the province in close proximity to orange sand dunes, absolutely symbolize this hotel. They encourage you to watch extraordinary and unique moments of Sun rise and Sun set in the dunes of Erg Cheebi, the Sahara Desert at its best, close to Merzouga village. Join Auberge Sahara for a camel trip into the dunes, a bivouac (nomad tents) and enjoy their night music activities, where you will meet true Amazigh (Berber) traditions from Sahara Desert.

Auberge Sahara offers family rooms, simple, double and triple rooms, also they provide tent accommodation.

Oasis nomad tents, desert tours and excursions
Imagine yourself driving a camel like a real Sahara Desert nomad. Cruise the orange sands of Erg Chebbi dunes on top of a dromedary and take one of our excursions into de dunes. They divide the dromedary excursions in 3 different modalities:

Camel circuit Sun set / Sun rise
You’ll be taken in a 2 hours cruise on the back of a dromedary into the dunes. You’ll be taken by the hotel’s staff which will explain some of Sahara Desert secrets.

Overnight in nomad tent, bivouac on the dunes
You’ll be taken for a couple of hours circuit trough out the dunes during the Sun set where the colours are fascinating and the temperature better to drive for a few hours into the desert. You’ll be received in the tents in the oasis by their crew that live in nomad tents in the middle of the dunes. You’ll drink a welcome tea and enjoy peace. Diner will soon come and you’ll taste magnificent flavours made right in the middle of Sahara. Music activity after diner will make your final delight right before going to bed.

  • Casablance Plaza was sold as Crowne Plaza on www.asiarooms.com; some serious false advertising here as it is no longer Crowne Plaza. A musty old hotel with snooty service.

Royal Mirage Merrakech - fabulous pool & location, ho-hum rooms, spotty service, over priced, I will stay in private Riad next visit

Golden Tulip Farah Rabat - the best of the bunch; first rate room and service; relatively pricey

Royal Mirage Fes - crap service, poor location, nice room, no hot water in the evening, I felt cheated for sure and think Royal Mirage sucks big time

Casablanca Plaza is in relatively good location, had a decent breakfast & rooftop pool

Royal Mirage Merrakech did have a sweet pool

Golden Tulip did have most modernly equipped room I had in Morocco

Royal Mirage Fes - no qualities I recognized

  • We entered at night, because it took hours to pass the customs. So we went to the next city, called TETOUAN. The streets were crowded with people and we had no idea where to go. "Oh Hotel Paris looks good!", Gisi happily shouted, detecting a hotel. It's not a good idea to stay on the road after sunset. Beside the Hotel is a garage. Even high Buses like our modified Ford Transit "HIDALGO" fit in (3,1 m). The rooms at the Hotel are quite quiet and clean. Not to much comfort, but the beds are fine. A great deal for the price.

The big garage besinde the hotel. It is close to the center with the ATMs and restaurants.

Sorry I can't remember the actual name of our Riad in Marrakesh, but you can chose from a number of them when you arrive in the city. Booking ahead may be important during the peak seasons, but we had no problem finding a great one on the spot. There are usually young kids hanging out at the taxi drops or bus stops that will take you around and find you a nice place for a small tip. A riad is a refurbished old house (sometimes a city block in size) that has a number of rooms usually surrounding a central courtyard with a fountain. Many have roof terraces for dining or relaxing. They are scattered throughout the old town districts in most cities. It gives one a much nicer cultural stay than a hotel or backpack hostel. The price ranges are all over the board, from over $100 a night to $15-$25 a night. Somewhere in between were where we stayed and the places were fantastic.
