A few questions

by mdbkw

We will be traveling to Essaouira soon. Would appreciate help with the following.

What is the correct prononciation of Essaouira.
Is it a walkable distance from the Supratours stop to the Hotel Des Iles with a small case.
Any general advice much appreciated

Re: A few questions

by BlueLlama

Before I went I'm sure I read that the correct pronunciation was something like Ess-a-weera. In Morocco, however, people seemed to say something like Ess-a-wehra. They always understood us though.

The whole town seems to be walkable with the Supratours stop being not far from either the centre or the beach. It isn't hot so carrying a small case wouldn't be a problem. Quite unlike Marrakesh, where the station requires a taxi ride and therefore numerous opportunities to be ripped off!

Do buy your ticket for the bus as soon as you can as we found our first two choices weren't available despite asking the day before travel.

Essaouira is beautiful - have a great time!

Esow-era will do.
To get from the Supratours bus stop walk along the path through the gardens with the town walls to your right, when you reach the main road with the sea ahead of you Hotel Des Iles is to your left, about a 3 minutes walk.
Do you know where the Supratours bus station is in Marrakesh? It's not at the main bus station but by the railway station.

Travel Tips for Essaouira

Spider crabs

Other fishermen are selecting the best spider crabs they will sell for a restaurant. All of them have a good size but they through back into the sea those of the spider crabs, which are not alive, and not moving anymore.

Mixed architectural styles

by matcrazy1

Essaouira is a good destination to see and learn differences between various architectural styles which reflect city past. Just keep your eyes open when you walk around. It's sometimes difficult to name an architectural style of an edifice as it's mixed and contain some elements of both european (Portuguese) and Arabic (Muslim) architecture.

by iwys about Restaurant Essalam

Restaurant Essalam is the cheapest of the cafe/restaurants on Esssaouira's main square of Place Prince Moulay El Hassan. Its set menus are only DH28 and DH40, but its tajines seem to be every bit as good as at the more expensive places.

Grab some streetside snacks

by pabertra

One thing about Moroccans is that they are passionate about food. Everywhere you turn there are vendors selling a variety of snacks. Some of my favorites were boiled chickpeas, ice cream, cacti fruit, and as you can see freshly sliced coconut. ***Warning*** Carefully inspect the food you buy from streetside vendors. If it doesn't look fresh then absolutely do not buy it as you may set yourself up to get sick.

We are in a fishing harbor, which means that the ocean is full of fish, which means that seagulls have plenty to feed on. Then they are everywhere, flying, plunging and trying to catch some fish. At some time, they can get noisy and a real nuisance !
