Travel Tips for Essaouira

Belt fish

by JLBG

This amazing belt fish is very tasty. It has a very delicate flesh and thus is difficult to cook correctly. Overdone, it turns into mashed fish ! The best way to cook it is either to coat it with breadcrumbs or to coat it with a thin leaf of "ouarka".

Argan fruit

by JLBG

The argan is looking like an olive but while in the olive, the flesh is pressed to get oil, in the argan, the stone is hand broken and crushed to get argan oil. Lot of work ! Women cooperatives are now preparing and selling argan oil which has become a ''fashionable'' oil

Medina (old Arab city)

by matcrazy1

My main activity was strolling around the medina of Essaouira and discovering its hidden, charming, little corners. I surely got lost a few times but... it was OK, and Essaouira is not that large not to find right way in a few minutes. Just don't forget where you parked your car :-).

The arabic city is surrounded by tall red walls and include many smaller in height, but still thick, walls inside as well. There are many both small and more impressive, large gates.

Essaouira, Castle in the Sand

by chrisvandenbroucke

When you walk for ten minutes on the beach, away from the city, you come by this so-called Caste in the Sand.
It must once have been a fortress or something but has been cut into two parts by the water erosion.

Legend goes that Jimi Hendrix named a song after this strange building when he stayed in Diabat, near Essaouira.
This song was composed a wew eeks before the legendary Woodstock.

Orange juice

by JLBG

Three oranges to fill a large glass of juice is the average. As the oranges are crushed strongly, the juice takes some of the spirit of the skin, which makes it tastier than usual juices. The juices are crushed right in front of you. They cannot be fresher !
