Authenticity

Best (5.0 of 5.0 stars)
by written on November 29, 2004

La Maison du Chameau (House of the Camel) is this incredible little inn located just at the entrance of Essaouira.

With just 8 rooms very comfortable and all funished in berbere style, this inn gives you a real feel of the every day morocan way of life.
The owner clever touch of berbere authenticity is that, although the wiring is available, there's absolutely no electricity in the entire inn so you have to use lanterns in the rooms while candles light the living rooms.

The staff is local, very friendly and ready to serve you at any time, the food is homemade and excellent.

What I liked best about this place is the real impression of peacefulness as it's situated 2 kms just off the main road in a totally quiet area.

The name of the inn refers to camel because it's also a "camel center" i.e. for a very small amount you can do camel rides for a few hours or even a training for a few days.

The rates are very good and you can go on breakfast or half-board basis.

If you don't have a car, they can come to pick you up at the center of Essaouira.

Unique Quality: Hammam

Directions: About 4 kms coming from Essaouira there's a camel sign on the right and continue about 2kms off the road (contact the inn for the plan)
