Distance bus to al jasira

by Rose234long

Can anyone tell me how far (how long) from suprabus terminal in Essaouirra to Al Jasira Hotel? Is it in walking distance witgh luggage?

Everything in Essaouira is within walking distance, If your luggage is on wheels you can manage. You can also hire a carousa, a man with a blue cart, who will walk with you to your hotel. It will cost about 10Dirhams although you will get asked for more. Alternatively you can take a petite taxi, also blue for 6Dh. You will find both options at the Supratours bus stop.

The Al Jasira hotel is about a 20 minute walk from the Supratours office. From the bus, head back to the beach road and keep walking south to the roundabout, Turn left, from there it is sign posted. A petite taxi would take 3 minutes.

Travel Tips for Essaouira

The port from the seafront boulevard

by JLBG

At low tide, the ocean goes far away from the shore, leaving a wide space of sand for strollers. In the background, the mostly white city shows on the right, the Skala in the center and the harbor on the left.

Artist, phone, fax !!?

by JLBG

How can we put all that together ? Does that mean that the manager (owner ?) is an artist that will transmute your doodle into a fax artwork ? Or will he sing on the phone to call your correspondant ??

Classic seafood dishes by the port

by BlueLlama about Chez Sam

The atmosphere at the restaurant is inviting and cosy (very welcome in the chilly Essaouira evenings) with portholes and larger windows looking out over the port. Romantic too. If you've just come from Marrakech as we had, it all feels quite odd, particularly with the jazz music playing and pictures of jazz musicians on the wall.

Food at Chez Sam is good but on the night we went not all choices were available. I'd been really keen to try the shrimp pastilla but it wasn't possible despite other shrimp dishes being on. The starters we chose (omelette and calamari) were fine, with the calamari being served with spiced grilled tomatoes and a little prawn rice which was a nice twist. It was maybe a little overpriced at around 10 Euros, however.

The main courses of a seafood tagine and lobster gratin were both filling and tasty. Our guidebook suggested that there was nothing particularly exciting about the food and I'd have to agree with that, though everything is solidly made and service is pretty good.

Overall? The food is fine, but it's the setting and the atmosphere that makes Chez Sam. An enjoyable night. Seafood tagine - I'd been wanting to try something both seafood-y and Moroccan since arriving and this was a really nice dish with plenty of flavour and a little harissa. The squid was good but not as perfectly tender as it could be.

Mosques and minarets

by matcrazy1

There are a few Muslim mosques in the medina. The city skyline is dominated by tall, always square in shape, minarets (in Turkey they are round). Nowadays, loudspeakers on a top replaced alive muezzines and call Muslims to prayer five times a day.

I packed long trousers to my city backpack to put them on as I wanted to visit at least one mosque. But they all are closed for non-Muslim visitors :-(.
