Hi we were in Essaouira in December and bought rugs from Bazar Ifoulki. We have not yet received them and was wondering if anyone knows how long it would take from there to australia.

RE: shopping

by angiebabe

Ive had a number of carpets sent to me here in london - and to my relatives in Australia - none have gone missing but can take quite a lengthy time - i know it can be worrying but seems to be quite normal to have to wait up to 2 to 3 months!!
some have arrived quickly - all luck of the draw and the shipping times too i think.
friends of mine had some sent to them in slovenia from my contacts in morrocco and they were worried too but they did eventually arrive after about 8 or 10 weeks.
a couple of times ive been waiting to eventually be told that they ended up being sent back to the sender!! wierd things do sometimes happen with the morocco post etc such as that, but generally big and expensive items such as carpets rarely go missing.

You've got as much chance of seeing them rugs again as I have of winning tomorrow's Marrakech marathon.

Travel Tips for Essaouira

Windy place !

Essaouira is well known to be a very windy place, with the trade winds born here. The net of lines for these little boats is a testimony of the strength of these winds. They are strongly and securely moored !

interesting local art makes interesting souvenirs

by angiebabe about numerous galleries around

the lonely planet suggested that of course lovelly locally made thuya marquetry items make lovely souvenirs with the work reputedly the best in Morocco but that a better idea might be a painting by one of the local artists.

When roaming around one can certainly see that there is plenty available with several gallery shops around and many souvenir shops with paintings clearly available for sale.

Near the covered passageway up to the Skala de la Port we noticed a shop with some interesting looking pieces around the entrance and went in to check it out. We spent over half an hour in this guys shop ending up being enticed by this and that and then it takes time doing the haggling stuff.
We both found some pieces that we liked that we thought would not only be souvenirs depicting what was special to us about Essaouira but also that it was providing some sort of income input to the area and hopefully the artiste that we bought of.

Unfortunately up on the ramparts there were guys painting pictures for sale that we and i like better actually than a piece id bought in the gallery and these guys' were better priced as well.
so why not just buy all of it! almost did i think but i am happy with the pieces i got and provides a bit more of morocco to have at home in England, New Zealand or Australia.

i was able to haggle for two pieces of a woman artist i think copying a style that i saw in an actual art gallery but i really liked her two pieces that didnt have the evil eye depicted all over it, for 140 dirham. then a larger painting together with leather art piece also for 250 dirham. and then up at the north bastion we got some small but cute blue and white paintings for 50 dirham each and then another painter up near him i loved his very colourful paintings of women having tea - he wouldnt haggle or budge from his price of 100 dirham each. i eventually got money from the ATM and went back and bought them. All a bit more expensive than my moroccans thought i should have paid when showed them later but no regrets!

by barryg23 about Cafe Restaurant Mermoz

Cafe Mermoz is a nice, small restaurant in the centre of Essaouira. The lunch menu was especially good value: you can choose main courses from as little as 25 DH while the set menus start at 50 DH. Two 3-course meals plus water cost us 140 DH (14 Euro). While the quality was not as high nor the price as low as at Laayoune (previous tip), I'd still recommend it.

The roof

The roof is covered with green varnished tiles. This type of tiles is more expensive than the regular ones and mostly found on wealthy houses, on official or religious buildings. Moreover, green is the color of Islam !

Close up of seagulls flying

Close up of seagulls flying around the Squala. If you are unlucky, you might receive a little gift from one of them ! Green tiled roofs, brass canons, seagulls spoil everything. And they are not even edible !
