Looking for partner to share accommodation during the Gnawa festival, June 24-28

by theruthi

I'm looking for a partner to share accommodation in Essouiara during the Gnawa festival. It is difficult to find single rooms. I would be happy to hear from anyone who might be interested, or who has any suggestions of a decent but not expensive place that might have single rooms.

Call Casa di Carlo. he does very good rates during festival time. Small, shared shower, no windows, but cosy & great communal space in courtyard. Here it's more about atmosphere and location. 5mins from harbour and main festival square. Still in a quiet location of the medina.

In case you still have problems with obtaining a single room, you may want to check out a travel buddy webside. Here is one, Good luck.

By all means do try the suggestions by "cabeyp". She knows the area pretty well.

Hi, we are two guys (one Spanish and other morocoan), living close to Casalanca. We are planning to go to the festival, from Marrakesh, but just for 3 days (nights of Thursday and Friday). We go by car, and it´s difficult for us to find accomodation for two people. If you find some for three people, or want to come with us and share expenses, contact us. My email is jaimegmar@hotmail.com.

Travel Tips for Essaouira

You can't get there from here...

by DesertStar

...at least not with your car!

You arrive at the city, your hotel is in the medina somewhere, you can't take your car in there, and you have large suitcases.

No problem. As soon as you find a parking spot between the walls and the marina, you'll be approached by a parking attendant (who won't look at all like one) and a barrow boy. If you know where you're staying, just tell them. The parking man will give you an extremely unofficial bit of paper which he will NOT display on the dash board (I was highly suspicious), but tuck on the shelf underneath it so it doesn't blow away (?).

Pay him. The Rough Guide says 10dh for 24 hours, but we paid 20. We probably could have negotiated but as usual, we didn't. At about $3.00 per day Canadian it seemed reasonable to us. We left the car there for two days, problem free. The barrow guy will take you to your hotel and trundle all your belongings in a cart ("chariot" in French) for a tip, of course. When you check out, the desk clerk will get one for you. There is a barrow man who lives right across the way from the hotel.

Taking pictures of women

by matcrazy1

There is a certain conservative touch to Essaouira. Local women are more veiled than in other cities. They walk on a street but never alone. Usually they are accompanied by a husband, children or at least one another woman.

I couldn't take pictures of their faces as they didn't allow me to do it. It's a sin in Muslim religion or some folks just don't like it. And their men looked a bit angrily for my camera as I noticed.

Fantastic Essaouira restuarant

by barryg23 about Les Alizes

We had out nicest meal of the entire trip in this fantastic restaurant. Les Alizes is hidden away down Rue de la Skala but it's definitely worth searching for. The 3-course set menu for 85 DH is a very good deal and they also serve wine from 95 DH.

The service was excellent and the place was packed. We were the only English speakers there, though there were no locals here; the rest were all French tourists (a good sign I guess). The people next to us had pre-ordered a pastilla (Moroccan speciality) and it looked great - I was so tempted to ask them for a bite.

Two 3-course meals, a bottle of wine and mint-tea for two came to 280 DH (28 Euro) - more expensive than your average essaouira restaurant but well worth it. Harira, Brochettes and Yaourt de Maison for me.
Harira, Couscous aux Sept Legumes and Fruit salad for Ruth.

Bastion Nord

by sachara

At the northern end of the Skala de la Kasbah, the walled platform with cannons, is the Bastion North, an impressive seabastion. Form here you have the easiest way to the Skala de la Kasbah.

The views are great, but during our visit in march it was a very windy place, not making it agreable to stay for too long. From the bastion a covered passage is leading to the former munition depots. Now you will find here small ateliers of artisans.

Get a close shave

by pabertra

If you are feeling adventurous or are just due for a close shave, then head on into a Moroccan barbershop where you can be shaved like they do in the olden days, with the scary razor blade sliding across your skin.
