essaouira music festival

by fluxus

Hi everyone!
i've recently took interest in going to essouira festival this june. could anyone give me some tips about the CHEAPEST way to get there from Spain? i'd also appreciate any related comments or suggestions regarding the festival and the ambient. 2 more: how about sleeping on the beach and travelling alone as a woman? thanks

Hello you!
I think the cheapest way is when you reach tangiers, you take CTM bus directly to Essaouira. You'd be better rent a room just near the bus station, where women could help you there with a 1 or 2 euros to find a room for 5 to 10 euros... then, you see whether the circumstances are fine for a sleep on the beach!...
Have good trip & enjoy your time!!

I definately wouldn't sleep on the beach as a woman on my own anywhere in Morocco. I think the best that would happen is you would have your belongings stolen, the worst could be much worse. And I don't think the police would be very helpful especially if you told them you were sleeping alone on the beach. You can see what I mean when you get there. Travelling alone as a woman is fine but you have to put up with a lot of hassel, and do put up with it never get angry or be rude because the situation can escalate very easily. Moroccans are very nice people but their views on independent and self reliant woman are some what turn of the century. Be respectful and you should be fine.

salam ,
The best is to join Tanger; I will recomend you to take the bus "CTM", you can also take a train (Tanger-->Marrakesh by train & Marrakesh--->Essaouira by bus "Supratour")

Schedules of the train:
TANGER VILLE --> ESSAOUIRA
06:00->17:45(change the train has SIDI KACEM)
or
09:00->21:30(change the train has CASA VOYAGEURS)

For more information about bus CTM: http://www.ctm.co.ma/ (Under construction)
For more information about train: http://www.oncf.org.ma/
For more information about Festival: http://www.festival-gnaoua.co.ma/

just for announced that to sleep in the beach is not a problem laying the festival, the ambient is original anybody women & men sleep in the beach, in their cars, but the problem is during the night it is cold (find a small group of people to spend the night) ;o)

Travel Tips for Essaouira

Still busy and no fish yet

by JLBG

I finally asked a guy. He explained me that they sold most of their fishing to large boats which operate from the nearby Canary islands and bring it to the Canaries, where the numerous hotels need a great amount of fish and pay well.

Branch of an argan tree

by JLBG

The fruits can be seen clearly on this close-up picture. They are light green and look like young olives. This is what the goats are looking for when they climb in the argan trees. At this point, they do not contain any oil.

Outside Essaouira

by khattabi_eg

When you're outside Essaouira, you find some places that are worth to be seen after you see almost everything inside the city. The pictures I put there are of the Kadi Eeyad University and a mosque that really looks beautiful.

The ramparts on a cliff coast

by matcrazy1

What are the ramparts in Essaouira? A large wall built round a town to protect it? Yes, but they are placed between the city and the Atlantic Ocean on a cliff coast as well.

So it's double attraction: the ramparts themselves and the amazing views over the ocean and the cliffs. And it was the most lively area of a city during day, I think. I could watch people there: both natives - mainly youths during lunch break (haha, some most brave of them were jumping to the ocean from the ramparts) and some (but not very many in October) tour groups. Charming narrow street running parallel to the ramparts is a must see.

Spider crab, sole...

by JLBG

Spider crabs, big soles, Atlantic mackerels, stripped bath, stripped mullets, Atlantic bonitos, great weever, gilt heads, sea perchs, red gurnards, silversides, shrimps ! Will that be enough for you, to begin with ! Oh, no, let us add tomatoes and a sprinkle of lemon, then, that will be perfect !
