Travel Tips for Ouarzazate

the Atlas studios and Studios Kanzaman

by call_me_rhia

If you are a movie buff, then I suppose a visit to one of the studios is a must. I know of at least two studios, the Studios Kanzaman and the Studios Atlas Studios CLA. They both are located about 2/3 kilometres from Ourzazate city centre.

I did not visit them inside, I just stopped for a photo. However I know that, if there is no movie being filmed, it is possible (for a fee) to go inside and visit the sets and locations.

Berber lad on a mule, High Atlas.

by Beefy_SAFC

It seems to be tradition with me that whenever I see someone on a donkey or mule (Turkmenistan, Egypt), he falls off. So I stood waiting for someone to fall off and...

...not once did anyone fall off!!! So I had to settle for a picture of someone not falling off!!!

The Atlas are the Berber heartland, not just within Morocco but right across neighbouring Algeria also. The Berber (the men still readily wear their traditional full length hooded coat - like the gentleman above is wearing) are the indigenous people of the area, with the Arabs late arrivals during the various invasions from the east along the southern Mediterranean coast. It is with the Arabs that Islam arrived, now followed to varying degrees by up to 98% of Berber and Arab Moroccans. Our leader for this trip was a devout Muslim and I made comment to one of my travel companions that he seemed a better person for it - whilst his beliefs were strong, he took a pragmatic, open approach to life and respected other people for who they were. This is something I can respect. He also had an okay sense of humour once you got to know him - even better. I guess the point I'm trying to make is because someone professes to a belief, they have a point of view and they should be respected for that. In this world, that is unfortunately not something people always do.

I forgot to mention that the area he took us to was his home area and a beautiful area he lives in too (even though the rain clouds hid most of the mountains - more to come).

local life around the kasbah

by angiebabe

Im naughty I guess but I love spying from roofs and all the interesting photo opportunities one gets from the look down and around.

Stunning views obtained from the roof of the Taourirt Kasbah here - way out into the fields and the dam and the hills in the surrounding distance but also down onto lower roof tops and ground levels where you can watch the local life going on.

The Glaoui who were here certainly had the prime lookout posts around here!

Tizi'n'Tichka Pass

Tizi'n'Tichka Pass
If you are travelling from Marrakech to Ouarzazate you will come across some spectacular scenery of the High Atlas Mountains. The road will take you up into the clouds and can be scary at times but worth it.

This photo was taken at a rest stop where most coaches stop for a break.
