What the risk in catching hep A on a 5 day trip?

by M&P

I read that vaccination is recommended-but it would be nice not to bother-what is the chance of catching hep A 5 day stay in Chefchaouen?
Thanks Mandy

The chances of catching Hep A are nothing whatever to do with how long you stay somewhere (as with any other disease).

Hepatitis A is most commonly transmitted by infected food or water. You will have no knowledge of whether or not the person preparing any of the food you eat has the disease and/or poor personal hygiene. They may, they may not. Some countries have a higher incidence of Hep A, which obviously makes the possibility of you being infected higher: that's why the innoculation is recommended.

It is your choice as to whether you have the recommedaed innoculation or risk infection: it cannot be anyone else's. You should be guided by your own doctor's advice rather than by internet posts.

You can be infected during the first hour of your stay - or not at all if you stay there for a year.

I recommend it for anyone who travels - I originally had the shots because I was going to China but I get my titres checked because as a nurse and as a frequent traveller I think it is such a small price and procedure to protect from such serious consequences that can be as a result of picking up Hep A.

A well publicized case in Sydney not long before I came over to the UK was with a nurse, who I have met, who contracted Hep A from eating contaminated seafood in a restaurant in Sydney - not good publicity at all but a rare case with drastic consequences - she had to have a liver transplant and luckily it was provided for her and all went well.

So in my thinking its well worth having the protection for wherever you are for however long.

Inside the Kasbah

by blint

The first time I went I went with a big group of friends and we decided to try and make out typical holiday snaps more interesting by doing silly poses. It made everything far more enjoyable. In the photos attached you can see us inside the Kasbah.

All this fun for only a euro! The Kasbah is located in the main Square.

A very charming Rif town

by Alice-Kees

Chefchaouene is a delightful town in the Rif Mountains. It seems to attract a lot of travellers. It's not too big a town with a relaxing atmosphere and its people are friendly and at ease compared to Tetouan and Tangier.

The medina is small so it's difficult to get lost here. Houses are painted blinding white with blue accents. Well worth a visit is the old kasbah which gives access to a cool and peaceful garden with refreshing water bassins.

There's not a great lot of other thing to do than walking through the Medina, do some shopping and drink tea in one of the many cafés, which makes this place ideal as a full day stopover on your itinerary.

Here's a good TIP that may be useful when wandering around the old town. Dead end streets are painted blue!

The Weather

by Redang

It's always very useful to check the weather before a trip:
- weather.yahoo.com/forecast/MOXX0010.html

The webs are for Tetouan, but Chefchaouene is very close.

How to transform from Fahrenheit to Celsius? Deduct 32, divide by 9 and multiply by 5.

Example: 85 Fahrenheit, minus 32 = 53, divided by 9 = 5,89 by 5 = 29,4 Celsius.

Kasbah Gardens

by kit_mc

Wandering round the Kasbah Gardens in the warmth of a shaded sun, being able to stop and take in the surroundings, as well as get views across the Medina from the top of the tower.

This is one of the places where you can be outside, collect your thoughts, take your photos and just have some assured peace and quiet!

The Kasbah is open daily until 6pm except Tuesday, and closed each day between 1pm and 3pm. Entry costs 10dh and includes entry to the Ethnographic Museum.
