Medina or New City

by JLAMERTON

Coming to Fez at beginning of May! Dont know about massive amount about Fez, presumably it is safe to wander around anywhere and is pretty westernised?? Looking at hotels and would like to know if should stay in the Medina or in the new city? Going to stay for 3 days and probably stay around pool in day and then go for a wander around and go to local restaurants rather than 5* one's

Thanks

I stayed in the Fes Medina. It's much more interesting and 'traditional' than the modern city that surrounds it. The city is safe and very "westernized".

Thanks for that have now booked into Royal Mirage

2 Questions having booked it appears that there are no bars or nightlife whatsoever in fes or men only places.

Also just wandering around what is suitable attire for woman? Are skirts / bare arms exceptable or would this only be acceptable around the hotel bar

Thanks again

They're used to the way 'foreigners' dress there, just don't wear anything too revealing like a sleeveless tank top or halter top, or short-shorts. The more conservative your dress the less-likely you'll be to draw attention to yourself.

Travel Tips for Fes

Water

by keeweechic

Be sure to drink only bottled water that has the seal unbroken. The water is likely to give you stomach upsets. Also beware of being given drinks with ice cubes. Orange juice is also likely to be watered down and of course anything like salads and raw vegetables will have been washed in water. While food can be well cooked and ok, the plates maybe the problem when they are washed in the same water as everything else.

Sefrou

by sonicliz

Sefrou is a town only a few kilometers away from Fes. It is worth a daytrip to see the beautiful cascades, parks, and peacocks.
It's also the OLDEST city in Morocco.
It has a distinctive pace and charm. While you can get anything you see in its medina at the medina in Fes, it is smaller and less intimidating.
There is also a cherry festival held here in June.

You can take a grand taxi here, it takes maybe 20-30 minutes. Don't forget that there are several grand taxi stations in Fes. When going there, ask to be taken to the "Sefrou grand taxi station."

CTM bus to Nador

by earthflyer

CTM have 2 buses departing for Nador.

Journey time 6 hours.

Tickets are around 80 dirhams plus 5 dirhams for luggage.

All buses depart from the CTM Bus Station near Place Hussein de Jordanie next to the mosque.

Please use prices as a rough guide only.

Roaming through Fes' Medina

by Venturingnow

While in the medina, either get your guide to take you to the tannery, or try and locate it. I had a great time in some leather shop overlooking the tannery where the locals dye leather in these huge pits of dye. It's really interesting.

Famous Doors

by keeweechic

The Moorish arches and golden doors to the Palace compound are probably the most photographed in the city with the beautiful bronze filligree knockers. The doors which are engraved with a geometric pattern are known as the ‘Gate of Nehass’. There are 7 bronze gates in all to the complex. Beautiful Zelij tiles surround the doors and arches.
