Hi all, I have booked 3 nights at the Ramada hotel Tangiers at the beginning of may with my girlfriend, and I could use some help as to what to do where to go,local customs, what the hotel is like etc.
I am also looking to spend a day at another location. Recommendations please!!!

It is always a good idea to check with Trip Advisor to read any reviews ? http://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Review-g293737-d305607-Reviews-Ramada_Les_Almohades-Tangier.html

The hotel is on the seaside and a short 'petit taxi' ride to the old city. I would suggest that you hire a guide who can take you around the Medina and show you some of the other sights. Maybe half a day would be enough for that. There is an organisation in Tangier licensing guides and the hotel can arrange for one. I think sometimes the 'culture shock' can be quite high if you are not used to travelling however it is a great city with plenty of history.
You could consider taking one of the long distance buses that are found at the Gare Routiere where you also find Grande taxis. They can take yo around for example one popular destination is Tetouan - not too far to reach and this was the city within the Spanish area of Morocco when it was divided between France and Spain. Tangier was a Free Zone during those days. I wrote a few tips on my Tangier page.

For a day trip from Tangier try Asilah a very beautiful Moroccan town on the coast.

Read some my VT pages on Asilah, Tetouan, and Larache in Morocco maybe they can help you where you want to go for another location.

At the Edge of Africa

by Geoff_Wright

The photo was taken at Cape Spartel, which I believe is the most northwesterly tip of Africa. It's where the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea join forces. I had noted this point before we left for Tangier, and assumed a lovely, clear view over the Straights. However, what with the misty weather and the tall trees, there really wasn't much to see. Even at this stop there are guys trying to sell you more hats, more belts!!

Trivia

by keeweechic

During the early days of World War II, US espionage operations were based in Tangier.
For the period between 1932 and 1956, Tangier came under the control of a 30 nations committee to be an international tax free zone. Wealthy expatriates used the city for financial fraud and smuggling operations.

Making New Friends

by Geoff_Wright

We got chatting to this lovely Indian couple, Smita and Prabhou Chauhan, who live in West London. It was nice to have someone else to chat to during the tour, rather than walk around with a group of total strangers, never getting to know anyone. So now we have exchanged names and addresses, and, who knows, they may even become VT Members, LOL!

Currecy: dirhams

by Carmela71

Dirham is the currency in Morocco, it is divided into 100 centimes. You will find notes of 20, 50, 100 and 200, but with the last two notes you will find problems when you want to change it.
For exchange of money, you will find ATM machines around, but you can also ask at the reception of the hotel, change of it is around 10,60 for a euro. Big hotels will accept credit cards (not at the Hotel Continental)
