The Palmery - thousands of date palms
by vtveen
The Palmery (or La Palmeraie) is a rambling oasis just northeast of the city.
There is a story, which says this palm grove was created by accident. Centuries ago in the days of the great caravan trading, merchants (or soldiers) refreshed themselves here with water and dates. The stones were spat out, creating the palm grove. But others say this is absolutely impossible, because these palms don’t have eating quality dates.
Any way nowadays there still are more than 150.000 date palms covering an area of 130 hectares. The palm grove is irrigated by ditches and wells. Some of them are abundantly growing; others do have some scanty leaves.
We visited the Palmery (from Majorelle garden) with a ‘petit taxi’ along the 5 km long ‘Circuit de la Palmeraie’; a meandering road through the palm trees, along beautiful mansions, some hotels and the golf course. On a couple of places camels and their guides are waiting for tourists, offering rides through the Palmery (our taxi driver was pushing us, but we were not interested). We made a couple of stops, making pictures and walking around through the oasis.
You also could visit the Palmery by a horse-drawn carriage.
