I am traveling to morrocco and visiting Marrrakesh for a few days. Can you tell me what to expect, what to avoid, how to dress for the fantasia. I have read things that cause me concern so any enlightenment would be appreciated.

Hi! I visited Fantasia in January 2005 - if you check out my Marrakesh Night life tips You'll find some information which might help.

You say you have read things that cause you concern-is this about Fantasia or Marrakesh?

Have you read the VT Marrakesh Forum questions and answers? There are FAQ's re people travelling to Marrakesh which might help you.

Please feel free to contact me for more information. (I had lots of help and re assurance from other VTers, when I was planning my first solo trip to Marrakesh!)
Best Wishes,
Sue.

Travel Tips for Marrakesh

Spices, Nuts and Dried Fruits

by keeweechic about Food and Drink

Throughout the street markets you will find containers of wonderful fragrant spices including coriander, cumin, turmeric, ginger, saffron and paprika. Moroccan dishes are made up of most of the ingredients. A lot of the spices are imported into Morocco.

Café Argana

by toonsarah about Friendly service

This was another lunch-time choice, and a place where we particularly appreciated the friendly service. They usually only serve drinks and pastries on the ground floor terrace – for a meal of any description you need to go upstairs to the roof terrace or first floor dining area. But this was just a couple of days after my accident and I didn’t feel up to tackling the stairs, so the waiter kindly fetched a menu from upstairs and served us a lunch there on the ground floor terrace.

We both had an omelette – cheese for me and mushroom for Chris. They were nicely cooked (i.e. not too much) and generously filled. We then ordered a pot of mint tea and what appeared to be the specialities of the place, a small plate of assorted Moroccan pastries – 7 for 30 dirhams. These were delicious and not as sweet as I had imagined they might be.

Essaouira

by Acirfa

The first thing you will notice as you head out of Marrakesh and into the coastal area is the change in colour of the buildings, taxi's and various signs from pink and green which represent the earth to white and blue which represent the sea and sky.

This busy little fishing port has a mini medina which is built around several French piazza's. There is a beach where the surf is internationally renowned to those whose partake of the sport.

After strolling about the town you will no doubt find yourself perched in one of the cannon crevices or on the beach or possibly drinking a cool drink in one of the squares, watching the world go by.

There was a time when a Jewish community lived here but they deminished when independence was declared in 1956.

A few little facts:

1) Cat Stevens (Yusuf Islam) visits annually
2) Orson Wells stopped by to make part of his Othello here
3) Sir Francis Drake ate a Christmas lunch in the vacinity

Mouassine Fountain

by suvanki

This unusual fountain is near the Mouassine Mosque (16th century Saadian)

At the beginning of the 20th century, Marrakesh had over 80 fountains, which provided water for the mosques, public baths and orchards.

The fountain has 3 sections- 2 are arched and one has a decorative carved wooden canopy- this one is for humans, the other 2 are for watering animals!

This fountain is near to other attractions such as the dyers souk (for photos of bright coloured dyed silks and wools- not the tanneries, which is further on) Ali Ben Yousseff Medersa and Mosque, Marrakesh Museum and the Koubba Ba'adyin.
