More about La Sultana Hotel

An oasis in the middle of kaos!

by Bali-Babe about La Sultana

This is an incredibly romantic place to stay in Marrakech. It is close to the action, located just a few blocks away from the square. It's hidden down a secluded alleyway, without a sign to indicate this rare find. If you dreamed of coming to Marrakech and staying at a Moroccan themed fantasy resort, then this is the right choice of accomodation!

The hotel is a converted riad with about a dozen or so suites, all decorated in the themes of different animals. It is the best example of Moorish style architecture and doesn't compare to the old palaces that you can visit. You will be more impressed with the architecture at La Sultana than anywhere else in Marrakech.

La Sultana will also provide you with impeccable service and spotless suites. At night they have a Moroccan musician that plays instruments around the courtyard poolside, creating a lovely ambiance. Halls are dimly lit and romantic and the staff are tuned in to your every need. Make sure you are near a plush chair when you receive the bill upon checkout though.....it's worth every penny! Besides for the wonderfully spacious suites with original themes, you will be thoroughly amused by the fresh flower petals that are in your toilet water each day after your room is cleaned.

Make sure you have an assisted hammam downstairs in the spa. It is a truly unique experience which you can try with your companion. Afterwards you can have a terrific massage with your choice of fragrant oils, topped off with a relaxing hot tub soak.

To escape from the bustling streets of Marrakech, try the plunge pool on the rooftop of the hotel or a drink at their bar. Relax on the chaise lounges on the roof and get a glimpse of the minarets and the Saadian Tombs next door.

Essaouira & Safi will make a good round trip for a day escape from Marrakech but you will be better of hiring a car than relying on local buses for a day trip.

Safi is about 2 hours away and Essaouira about another 90mins down the coast but well worth the trip. From Essaouira back to Marrakech is 3 hours.

check out my pages on these places.

Spend time in the Jamaa el Fna. Great time is early evening - get a seat at an upstairs cafe and watch all the action below. Try some of the unusual foods from the stalls and wander the souks (bargain hard!).

The mosque La Koutoubia is across from the JEF. The gardens around it are really nice but no entry into the mosque. Wander all the streets and alleys around the JEF as well.

Musee Dar Si Said was an interesting museum. Go to a hammam! I'd recommend Hammam Ziani - it was fantastic!!!

Our wonderful riad was located in the Kasbah - great neighborhood. The Tombeaux Saadiens and the Mosque of the Kasbah are in the area.

The Musee de Marrakesh is stunning. The Medersa Ben Youssef and the Kpubba Almoravide are near the museum.

The Palais De La Bahia is another beautiful place. You won't run out of things to see in Marrakesh. It is fascinating.

Be sure to have a tagine dish and mint tea!! (Further info and descriptions of the above mentioned are on my Marrakesh page.)

Have a great time!

Try Essaouira you find mini bus trips in jamaa el fna Sq, the prices are better
for presents, the art work is amazing.

We enjoyed the evening at Chez Alli, dinner in a huge tent, entertainment, followed by Berber Horsemen giving a show outdoors. Very popular. See photos on my page and you can decide whether it is your sort of evening. I think there is a travelogue as well.

Travel Tips for Marrakesh

Magical carpet rides

by tord about Everywhere

Carpets are everywhere and if you have the time to spend negotiating you may get what you believe to be a bargain. It will certainly be cheaper than buying the same carpet in the UK. You'll pay with your heart, not your head.

Nice and romantic

by RiinaK about Le Square

The other restaurant with a very nice and romantic atmosphere and great food we found was almost round the corner of hotel Sofitel. Unfortunately I do not know the address. The tables were mostly outside on the grass and the delicous food was served while romantic music was playing. As far as I adore seafood I can assure it was good but I tried also lamb and cannot say anything but great about it.

Medersa Ben Youssef

by call_me_rhia

One of the most imposign sight in Marrakech, andpersonally my very favourite one, is the Medersa Ben Youssef, an Islamic school dates back to the 16th century (it was founded by the Sultan Abū al-Hasan) and which can be visited. It is the largest medersa in North Africa.

The medersa is two floors high and it is richly adorned. The courtyard and ground floor would be used mainly for praying, although 51 students had their rooms here, too. There was also a water room where they could perform their ablutions before their prayers. In total the medersa could host as many as 900 students.

Don't worry if you think that you have seen something similar before - many people have noticed similarities to the Alhambra Palace in Granada.

Mosquée et Fontaine Mouassine

by MM212

The Mouassine Mosque and Fountain are part of the Moussaine complex, built in the 16th century under the orders of the Saadian sultan. Previously, the area was a Jewish neighbourhood, but the inhabitants were moved to the newly constructed Mellah district near the Kasbah. The Mouassine complex is a religious and cultural centre consisting of a mosque, a hammam, a medersa, a library and a fountain. This public fountain is the largest of several in Marrakech and consists of four drinking booths, three for animals, and one for people. As in most Marrakchi fountains, people drink from the most ornate fountain (see photos - I was able to sneak into the mosque and take pictures when no one was inside!).
