More about Riad Elizabeth
Wonderful haven of relaxation
Having booked our stay at the last minute we were incredibly lucky to find a vacancy at Riad Elizabeth. We were overwhelmed by the kindness, generosity and hospitality of our hosts John and Elizabeth to say nothing of their stunning Riad. We ended up staying there for a couple of nights at the beginning of our stay and for another night prior to our departure and were again amazed by how riad Elizabeth stands out as a wonderful haven of relaxation in Marakesh. Elizabeth herself arranges bookings at the most chic and elegant of restaurants and her and John couldn't do more to ensure that their guests make the most of their stay in Morocco. We couldn't recommend this Riad more and are definitely planning on staying there again.
The Riad Elizabeth was not the most expensive Riad I was looking for when I booked but was the best I've stayed in.
John and Elizabeth's oasis in the old medina is wonderful. Amazingly renovated by the couple and beatifully decorated. If you're looking for a short stay in Marrakech and really want to be looked after in a stylish yet comfortable Riad then look no further.
John and Elizabeth are the owners and their hospitatilty is brilliant. They make you welcome from the minute you set foot in the place. The rooms spotless and immaculate, the roof top terrace a greta place to chill out and I strongly reccomend trying the cuisine in the Riad (It was better than any of the restaurants we went to)
I cannot recommend this place enough!
John and Elizabeth gave a great welcome!
I have just got back from staying at the Riad Elizabeth. My sister and I had a fabulous time in Marrakech.
John and Elizabeth (the owners) were excellent hosts - they are an English couple who have only recently opened the Riad. The place is stylish and very conveniently located. There is a lovely roof terrace - a real sun trap. A pool (now heated!). A nice communal area - with sofas. A kitchen for guest use and an honesty bar so you can help yourself to drinks when you wish. John gave me a course in how to be a barista on their very posh coffee machine.
You can book the hotel with John and Elizabeth directly or through hipmarrakech.com. If there is not availability or you have a large party then they will arrange for you to stay at another lovely Riad just up the street. We did this for 2 days of our 6 day stay. This Riad was also lovely - beautifully decorated and also had a pool.
The Morocco style breakfasts were lovely - each day you got one new thing to try, pancakes, cakes etc - it is not an English style breakfast but it sets you up for the day and I prefer a continental style breakfast anyway.
We ate in the hotel twice and each time the food was lovely. There are some fabulous restaurants to try - and everything is very reasonably priced compared to England. We ate at the Foundouk, the Marrakechi, Narwarma and these were all excellent. The cafes with terraces in the square are great for lunch - you can have a really nice lunch for the cost of a sandwich lunch in England. The cafe at the gardens is a must (as are the gardens themselves).
There is plenty to see in Marrakech. The souks are much much better than I expected. I came home with plenty of lovely things. Leave room in your suitcase if you want things for your home as some things are rather large. I got some gorgeous tea spoons, some silk cushion covers, some metal ware, more belts than I care mention, a scarf.... a few camels !!!
The people in the souks are all very friendly and haggling was fun. By the end of the holiday people that we can spoken to or had bought stuff from were saying hello and passing the time of day with us - which was lovely.
I would recommend this riad to anyone and Marrakech to anyone who wants some culture, something a bit different and some sun. I was very impressed by everything and I am not easily pleased.
An Oasis in Marrakech
John & Elizabeth are the perfect hosts, always willing to offer advice on the best places to visit, shop or eat, nothing was ever too much bother and they made us feel at home throughout our stay.
The Riad itself is excellent. We have done a lot of travelling around the world and stopped in some of the best hotels and we can honestly say the Riad Elizabeth is up there with the best. John & Elizabeth have taken a lot of care in renovating the riad and it is very tastefully decorated throughout. Our room was lovely and we especially enjoyed the little personal touches. We had two very good meals in the riad and enjoyed having breakfast on the roof terrace, which was also good. We also thought the honesty bar on the terrace was a good idea as you could always go and help yourself to a drink when you came back from a day out around the city.
We also had a fantastic meal at Fondouks which was one of the restaurants they recommended and isn't far from the riad.
We can't wait to go back

A fantastic haven in the heart of the Medina
I stayed in Riad Elizabeth for a night in early November before starting a pre arranged group tour of Morocco. I would have loved to have stayed longer. This place was amazing!
The service received from the Riad owners (John and Elizabeth) was exceptional, with John and Elizabeth greeting each guest by name. I was welcomed at the front door with a warm glass of Moroccan tea, shown around the Riad and then given a guided tour around the Medina and the various souks which are right on the doorstep.
The Riad has been beautifully restored and the attention to detail is fantastic- there are ipod players in every room, and even scented candles in the bathrooms. The Riad seems more like a boutique hotel- every room is furnished differently, with a very nice pool area and attractive roof terrace with sun loungers and a bar/ reading area. It all feels very homely and is a great place to relax after the madness of Marrakech!
Overall, I thought this Riad was exceptional. I stayed in other hotels and riads as part of my tour and this was by far the best. The location was first class and provides an ideal base by which you can take time to explore this amazing city. I will definitely be back, and will be staying at Riad Elizabeth!
Special riad in marrakesh
We have just returned from a 3 day visit to Maraakesh in Riad Elizabeth. We chose it because of the amazing reviews on Trip Advisor and can confirm that it certainly lived up to all expectations and all previous reviews were accurate.
Our hosts Elizabeth & John were very welcoming with local tea and homemade pastries on arrival. It was very helpful to be shown the route to the main square through the souk and be introduced to the Medina. The Riad is tucked away just north of the Ben Youseff (spelling?) school but is easily accessible to the souks and centre of the Medina.
The riad has been beautifully designed in a contemporary style. Our room had a log fire and very comfortable bed.
We chose eat in the Riad on the first night since we had a very early start in the morning. Elizabeth emailed in advance and asked for requests/likes/dislikes but as was agreed surprised us. The food was delicious and the dining room very romantic. Coffee was served on the roof terrace by a log fire.
There is an honesty bar but please ask John to make gin & tonics - he won an award for them.
We chose to eat at Le Tobsil on the last night which was wonderful. Another celebrated restaurant Le Fondouk is, however, just round the corner. Elizabeth is happy to book restaurants and taxis etc. for you.
Summing up we had a very memorable stay in Marrakesh and would happliy recommend Riad Elizabeth to everyone
Fantastic first experience of Marrakech
My first experience of Marrakech was fantastic, chiefly due to the warm hospitality we received at Rhiad Elizabeth. John and Elizabeth were super hosts and ensured that we were very well looked after. The Rhiad was tastefully decorated, stylish and contemporary and our room was very comfortable.
The atmosphere was very relaxed and they have created a very sociable space on the roof with a well equipped bar and sun loungers, a great place to relax after the noise and excitement of the central square.
The Rhiad is well situated near to good restaurants and the souks. I would certainly recommend it and hope to go back next year.
Wonderful riad, superb hospitality
We have just returned from 4 nights at Riad Elizabeth, which we selected after reading the reviews in Trip Advisor. John and Elizabeth, the resident owners, fully deserve all the plaudits from their previous visitors.
John and Elizabeth were wonderful hosts, and staying at the riad is like becoming a member of the family. They greeted us with tea and pastries when we arrived followed by a walk through the souk to Jemaa el Fna square (and hand drawn directions so that we could find the riad on the way back). They were always ready with advice or help in booking restaurants, but without being intrusive.
They have obviously enjoyed renovating and decorating the riad, and have a brilliant eye for design using the local style. The rooms are all individually designed and are very comfortable. The roof terrace is perfect for relaxing after a day in the souk or sightseeing, and John’s honesty bar is well equipped. We ate in the riad on the first evening and had a very delicious Moroccan meal in a relaxed dinner party atmosphere. We also had a superb meal at le Fondouk restaurant, within walking distance, and sampled the delights of the food stalls in the Jemaa el Fna square one evening.
Marrakech lived up to all our expectations; bustling, lively, and lots of interesting shopping in the souk. Yes, we were “greeted” by a succession of shopkeepers, but they were friendly and we never felt hassled.
We will definitely return to Marrakech, and we just hope that Riad Elizabeth is not fully booked.
Marrakech Riad #1
For our birthday presents, our daughters decided to treat us to a weekend in Marrakech at “…this super riad we found”. It seemed a shame to just go there for a weekend, especially as it would be our first time in Morocco and the location sounded good enough for at least a week, so that was what we booked. Good decision!
Riad Elizabeth is amazing! If you are planning a trip to Marrakech, don’t bother with the big, posh hotels - however hard they try, they are almost always impersonal (unless you are an A-list celebrity, which we aren’t). No five-star hotel (and we’ve stayed at a few!) has ever accorded us the welcome that we received from Elizabeth and John, the resident hosts and owners of Riad Elizabeth, and their staff are equally attentive.
During our stay, no request was too much trouble; taxi, trip and restaurant bookings were made efficiently, excellent dining recommendations were given (don’t miss Le Foundouk, Alizia or Le Comptoir). John and Elizabeth even make a point of personally conducting new visitors through the medina’s maze of narrow streets to the souk and the main square and provide a handy map (with waypoints) so that you can then find your way when you do it solo.
The riad has been tastefully and comfortably refurbished. All the rooms are en-suite and have individually controlled air-conditioning and heating, so you can chill or toast as desired. The roof terrace is a great place to sup a G&T, review the day’s adventures and/or play a game of crib with your hosts. The ground floor pool is flanked by a lounge and a dining area where you can enjoy a superb dinner prepared by “the girls” – quite as good as any restaurant. If you want, they will even let you go to the market with them to collect the ingredients and then show you how to prepare the Moroccan meal par excellence that you enjoy later.
All in all, Riad Elizabeth is somewhere we are happy to recommend to anyone who is looking for good value, comfortable accommodation with excellent, personal service in an exciting and very different location.
We will be back, in’sh’allah!
Just returned from a brief 1 night stay at Riad Elizabeth.
Pros - John and Elizabeth were very good hosts and very helpful in ensuring we arrived at the riad as it is difficult to find.
- Riad had been completely renovated in a contemporary style and was quite stunning. All rooms had individual heating controls which was great.
- The place was very clean and tidy and the staff very pleasant.
Cons - On arrival at approx. 8.00 pm the riad was very cold - the dining area where we had booked a meal had the open fire but this was not in use - would have been a nice touch. Eventually John put the heater on.
- We booked a meal which was quite good - desert only a small fruit plate - also we had expected to have coffee / tea - none offered - real shame. We would have liked to spent the evening on the terrrace (nicely done out) but once again there was no fire on there so too cold.
- The rooms were very stylish but the mattress we had was very lumpy and uncomfortable - did not fit the base either
- Breakfast - poor - had to keep asking for more bread / tea.
I.m sure Elizabeth will look into these comments as she is very conciencous.
