'An oasis of comfort and good taste.'
Riad Enija has seen several guises since it was built by another local caid three centuries ago. In 1860 a wealthy silk merchant from Fez converted the palace into his Marrakech residence then, much later, a Swiss-Swedish couple, Ursula and Björn, poured their creative skills into decorating the riad’s twelve suites and three patios. Highlights include the Lions Suite, with its cooling azulejo tiled walls and grand cedar doors; the Lezard Suite, with autumnal furnishings and throw rugs that reflect the deep gold of a magnificently carved ceiling; and the Anemone Room, with a wonderful bed that is shaped like a ceremonial barge!
My room, on the upper floor, was known simply as the Bleu Room and I kept the large indigo shutters open so that I could wake in my four-poster bed to watch the palms swaying on my own private terrace.
Unique Quality: A particular Enija speciality is the menu of beauty treatments that include such far-flung ideas as ‘seaweed envelopment’ (in the Gateway to the Desert!) and the ‘salt, lemon and tequila body-scrubs’ (otherwise known as ‘the body-slammer’).
