The Crowning Glory of Marrakech's riads
Riad Farnatchi has the feel of a beautiful, highly individual, private house, but the facilities of a world-class 5 star boutique hotel.
British hotelier-extraordinaire Jonathan Wix knocked three small riads into one to create what was designed to be a private getaway for family and friends. The idea to turn it into Marrakech’s most exclusive riad came later and almost immediately the guest-book acquired some famous names: Scarlett Johansson and Angelina Jolie are said to be planning return visits and Russel Crowe once practised his Gladiatorial swagger in the suite that I was staying in.
The scale of this suite was fantastic. The bathroom was as big as other hotel rooms that I’ve known elsewhere and the lounge area was equipped with flat-screen satellite TV and hi-fi. Lighting was variable so that you can choose between ‘mood-lighting’ that seems to be de-rigour in most riads and a level that is actually possible to read by (seemingly rare throughout Morocco).
Unique Quality: The health and ‘sensual well-being’ factor is one that seems all important from the moment you enter Riad Farnatchi’s main patio to discover the large, sunken swimming pool. This is an unexpected privilege here among the cramped alleyways of the old city but it is just one of the many privileges to be found at Marrakech’s premier riad.
