More about Riad Jonan Hotel
Fancy some sun at the Riad Jonan
What a pleasure staying at Riad Jonan! The Riad is small and beautiful; the breakfast lovely with home-made yogurt, freshly made pancakes, good coffee and fresh OJ. The staff speak beautiful English and you will discover that this is a rare talent in Marrakech! The riad is well stocked with the latest British magazines and it is pure bliss dozing in the sun on the rooftop with a drink and the murmur of Moroccan kids playing down in the alleyways below the riad.
Location is good – walking distance from the souks, and all the major sites. …if you are lazy the taxis are cheap and are within very close hailing distance from the Riad.
The Baines de Marrakech is couple of yards away and if you fancy pampering the half day spa that Martin booked comes highly recommended.
Martin’s advice on restaurants was spot-on and the dinner we had on the rooftop at the Riad was beautiful accompanied by good Moroccan Merlot.
An oasis in the Medina
We had a fantastic 5 days at Riad Jonan where a wealth of extremely helpful information was provided by Howard and Martin; their assistance with transfers , suggesting and booking restaurants , organising a driver for an outing and help with numerous other small matters greatly increased our enjoyment and appreciation of wonderful vibrant Marrakech.
Riad Jonan is a haven of peace and tranquility within the bustling Kasbah. Martin and Howard always found time for a chat and are delightred to tell you anything you want to know about living and working in Morocco.
We couldn't recommend it too highly.

Just returned from a week at he Riad Jonan 21-28 Oct, the perfect accomadation and hosts Martin and Howard who were the perfect hosts booking trips, meals and a wealth of information about Marrekesh, thIs is a must stay Riad ,perfect location and the roof terrace ideal to unwind and relax, all the previous reviews were spot on and fully deserve the five star rating
We stayed four nights at the Riad Jonan in October. We were met by Howard (one of the owners) at the airport and from then on for the next four days their personal service they provided was first class. They explained many things about Marrakech on our arrival and gave us lots of suggestions of places to go and things to do. They made two reservations for us in excellent restaurants and also booked hammam treatments. The rooms are very pretty and clean and the roof terrace was a peaceful haven with lovely sun loungers and umbrellas. A good place to relax and enjoy a tea or drink after a busy day sightseeing or shopping. The local staff were also excellent. We were able to order drinks and refreshments at any timeof day and they would serve it wherever you wish (in the patio, your room or the roof terrace) The breakfasts were lovely and everything in the hotel is spotlessly clean. This riad is really great value for money with the service of a first class hotel. They are currently expanding into next door and we will definitely stay there again on a return trip. We really liked Marrakech and will be returning.
A great experience
I couldn't agree more with the previous review. It is virtually impossible to be negative about the Riad Jonan! I had a weekend away with a good friend - it was our first time in Marrakech and we loved every minute of it. Howard met us from the airport and we felt welcome from the moment we arrived at the Riad. We had one of the smaller rooms and it was perfectly adequate. There was plenty of hot water for the shower and good air-conditioning. The roof terrace was a great place to relax after walking for miles in the city's souks and parks. (Jardin Marjorelle, owned by Yves St Laurent is a fabulous place). Breakfasts were a real treat, especially the yoghurt and fresh orange juice. Their local knowledge was invaluable. They helped us book two memorable meals (the Marrakechi overlooking the main square and the Fassina run by a women's co-operative which served exquisite food). They also arranged a day out for us in the Atlas Mountains with their regular taxi guide, Kabour, which was excellent value. Just one note of caution. If you are going to walk up to the cascades, do wear appropriate footwear and clothing. At one point I found myself clinging with my fingertips to an almost vertical rockface! Definitely not for the faint-hearted!!
We stayed at the riad jonan from 16th to 18th September.
Howard was very helpful in arranging transport for us from the airport and contacted me on my mobile in the UK when our flight was delayed.
I cannot remember the name of the member of staff who greeted us on our arrival but he was lovely and very helpful showing us the way to the main square at midnight (because we couldn't wait to see it)
I had ordered a superior room through last minute.com but the room we had was cramped with no windows on the ground floor, right next to the area where you have breakfast. Don't know if they could hear us in the loo and shower but we could certainly hear them.
The breakfast was however tasty and sociable.
The roof terrace was lovely but were told we could not go up there after 11.00 or 11.30 i can't remember which time it was.
After reading the reviews on this site about how great this riad is and booking it on that basis, we were a little dissapointed. However, It didn't matter that much as marrakesh is so great we hardly spent any time in the riad at all.
Good location for exploring

Mind Blowing Marrakesh
Boring this may be but I have to agree with all the other reviews. We travel quite extensively and staying at the Riad Jonan was wonderful. Howard and Martin are very helpful and informative. It was a pleasure chatting to their staff to find out how moroccans lived and they were always ready to provide anything you requested. We stayed in the ground floor room called Pascha which was delightful. Breakfast was simple but delicious with plenty of choice and freshly prepared. I highly recommend the Moroccan pancakes! It was a short stroll to the main square (about 10 mins the way I walk which is slow!) where the atmosphere is electric. It was my birthday whilst we were there and we were recommended to try a restaurant called the Pavillion (there is a website) and I shall never forget it for all the right reasons - the setting and the food, magical and delicious. We spent a day in the mountains using a driver again, recommended called Kabbour who was informative and helpful and it is worth doing for seeing the other side to how people there live. Being a shopaholic take empty holdalls and really haggle like mad! For an oasis of calm in a manic city stay at this riad and you will have a holiday you will never forget. Thank you Howard, Martin and all your staff.
Beautiful, simply beautiful
I have to agree with the previous review, there is a wonderful atmosphere and it is a beautiful place, but the mattresses are very hard! Apart from this, the riad is perfect and we are certain to return.
Everything suggested by the owners was worth every penny or dirham! The Ourika valley trip was amazing, the spa only minutes away is a perfect way to spend the afternoon and to get a break from the madness that is Marrakech. The restaurants recommended from the very cheap Chez Chegrouni (around £7 for two with non-alcoholic drinks) overlooking the main square Place Djemaa al-Fna, to the up market Le Comptoir Darna with the belly dancers (not Moroccan, but who cares! They were amazing) were worth it and if you want a particular cuisine just ask the owners.
Apart from the matresses (which I suspect are good for you, but I’m not used to!), the rooms are beautifully furnished and the bathrooms were the best I had seen in Morocco (this was the fourth hotel on my trip).
The roof top terrace is perfect to sit out on as the sun goes down drinking coffee or having Morrocan mint tea (having requested less sugar!) with the accompanying mini almond pastries. When the sun is down the roof top is lit up.
I would not hesitate to recommend riad Jonan to anyone, but would prefer to keep it a secret.
Excellent and friendly Riad
We read the previous review and can't believe they stayed at the same location - maybe they need to stay at Butlins next year. We opted for the airport pickup (highly recommended if it's your 1st time in Marrakesh), and entering the Kasbah leaves you in no doubt that you are in a different country. However, step through the doors of the riad and you enter a different world.
The owners, Howard and Martyn, made us feel welcome immediately, and continued to offer accurate and hugely helpful advice for the whole stay. Their staff are attentive, polite and friendly.
We had asked for a superior room, but none were available. The standard room was absolutely fine - decor and facilities great, and ok, not huge, but who comes to Marrakesh to sit in the room.
We thought the breakfasts were excellent, and chose to eat at the riad twice in the evenings - at 250 DH (about £15) the value and quality is excellent (tip - try the Thai )
The location is great (about 15 minutes to ther square), and of course, walking anywhere through the medina is going to be hot noisy and smelly, but then why come to Marrakesh if not to be part of this experience. You could stay in one of the corporate style hotels in the town, but would miss the chance to see real life.
Would have no hesitation in recommending this riad to anybody, and as a bonus, our fellow guests were fun as well.
Perfect stay in Marrakech!
Howard and Martin are superb hosts, they really know their stuff! They can recommend anything and everything you need in Marrakech. The breakfast is really gorgeous, every detail is perfect. Met loads of nice people at the Riad (even stayed out late one night til 1am with another couple, oops forgot to take the key!) but really it's a fantastic bargain for a place right in the middle of it all. Only about a 10-15 min walk to the Souks to do all your shopping. My girlfriend and I managed to find many bars (you have to search for them). One cool one is at the Hotel Les Jardins de la Koutoubia, nice piano bar. We closed the place down. Be sure and do the Hammam spa and go for the all day trip with Kabul the tour guide! He's great. All in all, a wonderful place, definitely worth the money!
