Marrakech to Oukaimeden

by Durfun

Hi there,

Can anyone kindly suggest the best way to get to Oukaimeden from Marrakech.

Any regular bus services at all?

Is driving up there in a hire car an option? What happens when conditions are bad (snow on the road)?

Thank you.

And... HAPPY NEW YEAR :)

Re: Marrakech to Oukaimeden

hi Darshan, its a good proper road to get there and Ive been up it myself - in a car! I usually recommend rental cars as best way to get about for tourists there - or hire a grande taxi from Marrakech for the day - ie go down to the big grande taxi rank and hire a driver and taxi - usually no more than 750 dirham for the day and you can make a good day of it - otherwise rent a car for whatever days youre around and see more nice places around the area - such as out to Tin Mal on the way to TiznTest and even keep going over the pass and down to Taroudannt.
Generally if the roads get snowed on the snow ploughs are out to clear the roads.
Theres skiiing available up at Oukaimden as well - hire equipment on the spot there.
Dont worry too much - just go and see what happens and enjoy the place and your trip - whatever happens people are about to deal with the situation and youll be fine!

Travel Tips for Marrakesh

Bab Agnaou - Gate of the Black Men

by puerto_lover

The word Agnaou stems from the berber word aguinaw (or agenaou), meaning "black (men)". The gate leads into the Kasbah area of the medina and would have been used for entry by the traders who brought into Marrakech, black slaves from sub-saharan Africa. It was built on the orders of the Almohad sultan: Yacoub El Mansour (the same one who built the minaret!) in 1185. It is built from stone and is most impressive. Nowadays it is not used by traffic. The next door pair of gates is the main entrance to the kasbah.

Soft Leather Babouches

by suvanki about Art De Sud- Daoudi Mohamed

How I managed to limit my self to just one pair I don't know!

There was an array of colours, some plain, some with beading, some in silks.

Mr Mohammed is NOT a pushy salesman at all- he was very helpful when I wanted advise, but didn't pressurise me to buy.

All of the goods on sale are of a high quality- all hand made (Please see my previous tip for more details)

So - Hand crafted goods of a high quality, at a reasonable (set ) price, with no pressure to buy-- The Perfect place to shop!

Open 10.00 - 12.00 and 15.30-1800hrs. - During prayer times etc, he might not be at his shop, but someone nearby will know where he is and how long he'll be gone, or they'll go and find him Babouches!

Mr Mohammed also makes and sells a selection of hand bags, wallets, belts and foot stools. Most of the goods are set price - I paid 175 dh for my hand crafted calf skin babouches.
My total bill was 700dh for these and 3 bags!

Stand #15 in the Djemaa el-Fna...

by brewjohnson

Stand #15 in the Djemaa el-Fna Square (I don't know how often the numbers change, but 15 was great the night we were there)
There are many food stands to choose from in the Square. It might be safer to ask around before actually choosing one (some are not very sanitary, but the locals usually know the spots). You sit in the open air of the square and enjoy unbelievable traditional Moroccan food. Be careful, this is definitely a spot where you can over-eat. Cous Cous, chicken, and just about anything else they have

Night Food Stalls

by tafurojo

Eat in the night food stalls in Djemma El-Fna atleast a couple times during your stay in Marrakesh. I forget the number of the stall but these guys were great! You can get an assortment of foods from chicken, fish and beef kababs to french fries, Morrocan salad and delicious salsa for your bread. If they remember you from a previous night you may even get a discount and mint tea on the house.

The Koutouba Gardens

by keeweechic

The gardens leading up to and surrounding the Koutouba Mosque are smaller and not as impressive as the other gardens such as the Majorelle and Menara but nevertheless offer a tranquil escape from the bustling Medina.
