Marrakesh is the capital of the South. The wonder of many travellers than even with lots of tourist activity still remains special and unique. Marrakesh was in history for 2 times the capital of Morocco and actually gave the nowadays western name of Morocco. Marrakesh was founded in 1062 by Almoravid Sultan Youssef Ben Tachfinand, and quickly became very prosperous and one of the most important Islamic cultural and artistic centres as it was expanded after the conquest of Spain by the Almoravid Sultan. Marrakesh offers a lot to travellers and Riad des Droles, Riad in Marrakech, recommends you stay at least 3 full days up to a week in this thrilling town. Its famous square, Djeemaa Elfna is one of its main attractions and is a mixture of restaurant stands along with snake charmers, monkeys, acrobats, fire blowers, loud live music and endless Souq gates. Indeed a must while in Morocco!

A strikingly beautiful riad that is well maintained and serviced.

My wife and I stayed at Riad Lorsya in the beginning of May 2009 for 3 nights in the blue Perle d' Orient room. We were very impressed from the start. The appearance of Riad Lorsya is authentic. It is well decorated and detailed. Our room was extremely clean and charming. We received top-notch service from the staff. Abdullah is a very hardworking man who looked over our needs in detail. The complimentary dinner on the first night was amongst our best meals in Morocco. The staff got our train tickets for us, arranged transfers for us and arranged a day trip up to the Atlas Mountains. For improvement, the owner should not make it an issue if I want to use my credit card to pay for the room. Also, the owner gave us very inaccurate information in regards to the train schedule. I also felt the day trip to the Atlas Mountains was overpriced. I must say these are very minor qualms in the overall experience, but they should be addressed by the owners.

My wife and I spent a week in Marrakech for our honeymoon and found Riad Lorsya simply enchanting! It was fun finding our way through the twisting streets to our little oasis amid the hustle and bustle of the souk. Fatima was very helpful and made our stay so very easy and relaxed. Abdulah was just a delight to see every day with his pleasant smile and helpfulness. The rest of the staff was excellent too!!! I would definitely recommend Riad Lorsya to anyone spending time in Marrakech!!! Thanks SO MUCH for making our honeymoon so memorable!!!

as authentic as it gets

by TripAdvisor Member Cfreddy

This was my second trip to Marrakech, last year I stayed at La Palmeraie which was good, but after my stay at Riad Lorsya I can say now that I’ve experienced the real Marrakech. As soon as I walked out from the door I was immersed in the ancient Medina with maze-like alleyways, the colors, the smells, the buildings … it was like traveling back in time. Riad Lorsya was an oasis and a great retreat after a day in the souks. It’s a small property, so forget about the amenities you find big hotels, but if you’re searching an authentic experience, this is the place.

Just perfect

When it comes to accommodation in Marrakech, you need three things;

1. Good location
2. English speaking hosts
3. Clean, quiet accommodation, amongst the hustle and bustle of Medina

This place meets all three these requirements. It is absolutely perfect in every way. We showed this place to another traveller who we met on one of the day trips, who was staying at a hotel, and she was amazed by this place. She said this place was a lot better and more affordable than the place she was staying at.

I would recommend Riad Lorsya to anyone!!

lovely homely riad

by TripAdvisor Member Calvin_Sue

We stayed great 5 nights at Riad Lorsya. It is a homely Riad, comfortable clean and a lovely atmosphere with typical Moroccan colourful furnishings. It isn't 'palatial' like some, which makes it all the better.
Food and breakfasts were great and the staff were very friendly and helpful including the local area 'guards' who keep an eye out for you at night (not that at any time we felt uncomfortable - far from it).
My wife has limited mobility so uses a wheelchair for anything more than a few yards. Everyone was so helpful and courteous, I can't praise them enough. Airport transfer was arranged and we were met from the taxi and helped to the Riad. We hired a car through the Riad and they arranged it all. Yes the stairs up to the Roof Terrace was a struggle for her, but it was so pleasant up there she insisted on making it for breakfast and other times.
The location is perfect, as said in other reviews a little difficult to find, but once you have your bearings and can recall the different landmark doors!, you are only 3-4 mins amble from the Jemaa square and some great Moroccan and 'International' restaurants around the Mouassine Mosque area (I recommend Riad Flores, just near Cafe Bougainvillea).
There is the added advantage you are in the Medina but a 'residential' area of it, so once in the Riad it is very peaceful.
Only minor problem I had was their CCard reader was on the blink so I had to make a few trips to the ATM to pay the bill - but this was a blip I think.
Highly recommended at a reasonable price.

An Oasis of Calm

by TripAdvisor Member MikeMitch

My wife and I stayed in Riad Lorsya for 6 nights and found it a calm oasis - beautifully decorated and kept and with exceptionally friendly and helpful staff.
Finding your way there at first is daunting through the alleys in the Medina but you get to know your way around quickly enough - and we always felt very safe.
The Souk is so close by and is exactly what you would expect in terms of noise, life and bustle. We found the location excellent and walked absolutely everywhere from there - in the Place Fna in 5 mins or less. .
Best sight for us was the wonderful Majorelle Gardens - had a great lunch there.
Great stay, great Hotel - unique in a way - cannot imagine a hotel stay quite like it anywhere else.

We stayed at the Riad Lorysa for 2 nights in April and it was an absolutely fantastic experience. The staff are extremely helpful and I would recommend that travellers to the Riad get some guidelines from the staff if intending to make purchases or go to a hammam. The riad decor is fabulous and spent a bit of time simply photographing it. The riad is also suitable located close to the souks and the medina. I would recommend calling ahead to get directions though (if not being escorted there from a riad arranged vehicle) as it is quite difficult to find and there are opportunistic folks hanging around trying to make a quick buck of tourists. The riad provides the perfect respite for travellers. The stay at the riad was perfect and the staff are commendable for going out of their way to make this a truly memorable experience!!!

Red City of Marrakech

by johnsakura

Marrakesh is known as the "Red City" Marrakesh is the capital of the south of Morocco. The ambiance here is very different than other Imperial cities like Fez, Rabat or Meknes. This city is something like chaos messed up with berber people, music and gnawa people, everthing with palm trees, monkeys fire, dentists all in one! If you have the time, Marrakesh is worth to explore and come back and back and back. ah...and come back again...

A bit of Marrakesh’s history:

Marrakesh was founded in the 11-th century by the Almoravides. Coming from the south, from the Mauritanian desert which made a capital in the valley on the foot of the Atlas mountains.
Since then Marrakesh has always been one of the capitals of the Moroccan Empire, the great Rival of the Northern capital of Fes. Some Sultans prefered Fes, some Marrakesh.
In the beginning of this century the Glaoui, lord of the Atlas, became Pacha of Marrakesh. Marrakesh belongs to UNESCO World Heritage since 1985.
This was the city that gave the present name to the country Morocco=Marrakesh.

One of my favourite things in Marrakesh is its main square in the Medina part. Is the combination of all the craziness expected in the city itself.

Africa

by johnsakura

"Africa"

This is the biggest continent of it all. This huge continent contains a huge variety of people and cultures. The whole United States fits into the continent of Africa about 3.3 times, and that includes Alaska and Hawaii.
There are 54 countries in the African continent.
Africa has a very special energy that I also separate and make 2 different distictions: North Africa with its Saharian special energy and black africa also with its special but different energy. both indeed interesting and full of nice surprises and true people.

I came to Africa in several trips already.
when i was a child i used to go often to Ceuta, the spanish city in north africa and i guess that that fact stood with me until the present day. Now I often go to Morocco. Its my favorite vacations country.

Park Niokolo Koba-Senegal
Parc National de Niokolo Koba is one of the few places in Senegal that belong to the UNESCO programme for World Heritage.
The park is open during the dry season and this is the best time to visit it cos you can apreciate animal near water courses and all.

You can go to the park with a small car but for the majority of tracks inside it, you need a 4WD car or just going there with the trucks given by the park for payed excursions.

There are many large species of animals: buffalos, hartebeeste, shaggy Defassa waterbuck, bushbuck, antilope harnache or guib, warthogs, crocodiles and hippos; roan antelopem wetsern giant eland. and chimpazees. Some people say lions and elephants can be rarely be seen, although my guide told me its not true. Leopards can be seen.

cheap accom for non fussy tourist

by hmonagle

what is the cheapest possible way of styaing in marrakesh, ive herad rumours you can stay on teh rooftops of hostles for cheap, is this true?
also which is the best way to see the atlas mountains for cheap?? i dont mind roughing it!

RE: RE: cheap accom for non fussy tourist

by angiebabe

yes roof tops can be slept on at some of the places but in case youd like even a cheap room places like hotel gazelle which are pretty decent, are 60-70 dhm per person ie £4-£5 a night. no breakfast and no ensuite.
food is pretty cheap out in the cafes for breakfast, cafe toubkal in the djama elfna next to the big carpet shop is cheap for pancakes and coffee. the prince pattiserie in the street behind the hotel ali which is the street hotel gazelle is in is regarded as one of the best pattiseries in marrakech and prices are not bad.

RE: RE: cheap accom for non fussy tourist

by angiebabe

also, if you wanted to go to telouet in the atlas mountains near tizintichka its only about 50 dhm by bus each afternoon about 2.30 to telouet. and you can stay at lion dor for only 60-70 dhm, or camp or ask if you can sleep on their roof and then pay 30 dhm for a decent breakfast with them.
or camp out at tasgha camping restaurant auberge which is a lovely spot to sleep.
