If you are going to be in Morocco for your project I suggest you take a minidisc recorder and a good microphone and ask permission from musicians in the square to record them. You will have to give them some money - but that is after all how they survive! If you want Moroccan music there are also heaps of CDs available on internet of Gnawa Music, Berber Music, desert music and Andalous Music.

Hi,Both times that I've been to Marrakech, I've enjoyed listening to the musicians in Djemma El Fnaa, particularly a Berber group called Groupe Aylalen. They had cassette tapes of their music for sale which I bought. On the cover is a telephone number 044385961 or gsm 061 69 55 14. I don't know if this is for the group or the recording company.

I also recorded some of the music on my MP3 player, which has all the atmospheric background noise of people chatting, cars going by etc

I've also bought lots of cd's in Marrakech and Essaouira as well as from home of Berber, Gnawa and dance music.
Have You tried searching on one of the music download sites such as Realplay etc, or google Berber Gnawa Moroccan music and there should be lots of info.

Hope this is of some use.

Good Luck with Your project!

Travel Tips for Marrakesh

Good-Luck Storks

by MM212

One of the more interesting sights in Marrakech is the number of Storks around the city. They are particularly concentrated in the Kasbah area at monuments such as Bab Agnaou and el Badi Palace. They are found nesting over the high walls above the busy Medina. Locals believe that Storks bring good luck and as a result, the Storks are left to be. Attached are a couple of photos.

Petit taxis are everywhere. They are tiny and fun to ride in.
Make sure you agree with the driver on the price.
On the way back different driver wanted almost triple the price from us. We stood our ground and did not want to pay more than on the way in. It took us 5 min untill ge gave up and agreed on the same price.
So, make sure to ask at the hotel what the price should be and stand your grounds before you get into the car.
Don't be afraid! It is just different way of dealing with things! After few rides you will be a pro in paying just the right price!
As I said, it is fun!

Saadian Tombs

by tim07

For 10 dirhams you enter an ancient walled garden to get peace from the crowds & shade from the afternoon sun. You are then free to take a peak into the tombs & the prayer hall to admire the ornate columns & tiles. The garden also has some wildlife. A family of cats, a pair of tortoise & an owl nesting in the walls.

Henna Tattoos

by keeweechic

You will find Henna Tattooists in Djemma El Fna Square. They sit out in the open decorating any hand or arm who wants it. The decoration is supposed to last for a few days. Make sure you negotiate a price before they start. We were told to be careful of having this done as some do not use the traditional henna and what they use can be poisonous especially if its black.

"arriving in Marrakech: everything full! panic!"

arriving in Marrakech in the late afternoon I had to find a room for one night. The appartement in Gueliz (new part of town) were I was going to stay was not free yet.
the taxi driver told me that there was not a single room in Marrakech free.
not in a 1,2,3,4,5 or zero star hotel.
not in any riad.
this was confirmed by local friends.

I was very lucky. After making the tour of Marrakeck hotels and riads without finding a room free, I arrived at riad Fantasia in the old center.
Someone had made reservation but no advance payment, so they gave me the room for 40 euro. Maybe somewhat expensive but I was very happy. I do not like the idea to sleep on the terasse (10 euro) or on the street with the cobras! ;-)
few minutes later the guy arrived and was very upset.
I feel very sorry, he had to sleep with the cobras.

the riad was not very good and I did not like the smell of hasj that filled the riad thanks to the staff smoking habits!
very glad to leave after one night and stay in a very nice appartement in the new part of Marrakech. (Gueliz)
