hidden gem

We had to find other accommodation for our second visit to Marrakech, because our first hotel was booked. It was quite difficult to discover just that Riad in the old medina, which is nice, clean, close to Jemaa el-Fna and also affordable (browsing the internet I really saw prices which in my opinion are more or less ridiculous).

After reading a lot of reviews and some emailing with Shona Lines (the Scottish owner) we decided for Riad Safran. And having stayed there two nights (our first and last night in Marrakech) we are very satisfied with it. It is rather small with just four rooms, but absolutely clean, quiet and nicely decorated. Rooms do have space enough and offer all necessary amenities with good beds.

The patio on the ground floor is also breakfast room and there is a cosy sitting room with a TV. ‘Of course’ the riad has a roof terrace, which we didn’t use. It is possible to have dinner in the riad and I really have to sat the two dinners we had where among the best we had in Marocco. The last night we had on our request an excellent 'fish - tagine' !!

The riad is managed by a Moroccan guy, named Adil, who is very friendly and helpful in arranging trips and transportation. I highly recommend arranging transportation through the riad on your arrival; especially the first time (we arrived in the evening) it could be hard to find the riad.

Unique Quality: Location: very quiet in one of the alleys nearby the central square Jemaa el-Fna, just five minutes walk. All other sights in the medina are on walking distance.
Riad: nice, clean, well decorated
Dinner and breakfast: very good
Very affordable with just € 50,- per night (breakfast included) per room.

A minus point could be the lack of a lock on your room door. For us it wasn't a problem, just locked our suit case (beside there is a safe in the room).

RIAD SAFRAN MARRAKECH

Having stayed in some 20 riads on previous visits and having read the reviews for this riad on another forum we were a little sceptical as to what we would find at Riad Safran.

What we actually found was in its price range the best riad we have ever stayed at [knocking spots off a lot of more expensive riads], the evening we arrived there was torrential rain and flooding but when we walked through the door all was peace and calm, the rooms were as described on their web site, some of the largest rooms we have ever stayed in, and contrary to previous reviews we found the lighting to be perfectly adequate. We had pre-booked a meal through Shona the owner and were pleasantly surprised to be asked if we had any dietary needs, one does not usually get this choice in Morocco, the meal was excellent [a fantastic introduction to moroccan food and service for my two family members making their first visit].

Next morning the breakfast was superb, again being sceptical about peoples description of how close they are to the square we found that even accompanied by an 80 year old we reached the square in 4 minutes.

We did arrange a day trip to Sette Fatma through Adil the riad Manager and although we probably could have got cheaper transport the taxi which turned up was a new people carrier with an english speaking driver who catered to our every request for stops etc [for those who have not travelled in Morocco taxis generally leave a lot to be desired] so it was well worth paying the small extra charge.

Adil also organised a Riad for our last night in Marrakech as Riad Safran was fully booked and again he came up trumps, we fail to understand why some previous reviewers seem to have it in for Adil as we found nothing was too much trouble for him and as he spoke excellent english he was able to cater to all our strange english ways, all the staff were extremely friendly and helpful although not overbearing.

The only negative thing about giving this riad the excellent review that it merits is that when we try to book for our next stay it may be fully booked.

Finally we can only say we highly recommend you give it a go you will not regret it.

Unique Quality: Large rooms, friendly staff, manager speaks very good english, great location, excellent breakfast, very clean and well decorated, very reasonably priced.
