Is it possible to do this or is Supratours the better option?
Also would you recommend any hotels near the Railway station? We are arriving very late, booked 2 nights in Essaourira, then return to Marrakech for 3 nights.
thanks for any advice.
There's no train to Essaouria that I've ever heard of. I used to enjoy the Supratour trip, comfy and reliable - do that.
There always seems to be an Ibis hotel near the train station - big, perfectably acceptable and decent food.
Have fun,
Jamal Morelli
Thanks a lot - will investigate Supra option and hotel mentioned. Thanks for the reply.
We hired a car and drove, the only time in Morocco that we didn't use public transport, and found the road good. Loved Essaouria, great atmosphere, more relaxed than Marrakech. Hope to go back some day.

The very first night, right after landing on African soil and leaving our luggage in our Riad we wondered few blocks to the Djemaa el-Fna Square. After walking 3 times around the food stalls and trying to figure out what is what, and how should we approach our supper we gave up and ate at stall # 117 or 114 or was it ....113??? No, 142... Who knows.....
The food was great. We had some local fish, as a matter of fact about 3 kinds of local fish, we also had plenty of vegetables, cold bottled water, and God knows what else on our plates and silverware that everybody knows is not washed but just wiped with a white packing paper. I was looking for any signs of a stomach sickness but did not found any so I guess I can say .... I enjoyed everything I ate that night.
This palace was built in the 1890's by Bou Ahmed to house his family and retinue of 4 wives, 24 concubines and countles children. The architecture reflects the Muslim need for privacy with rambling rooms, eloborate reception halls, living quarters and pleasure gardens, fountains etc.
The ruling Sultan, Abdel Aziz took displeasure with Ahmed for having the palace and upon his death had the palace looted.
We enjoyed our visit to this palace, which still retains beautiful tiling and other examples of Moroccan craftmanship.
A koubba is a cube like building crowned by a dome and housing the tomb of a venerated person.
This brick built dome is the only example of Almoravid architecture in Marrakech. It was under the Almoravids that Moorish style developed in Morocco with Andalusian elements including horseshoe and lobed arches, kufic script and floral decoration, scrolling acanthus leat motif and the use of decorative plasterwork.
Built by Ali Ben Youssef in 1106 it originally was part of a richly decorated mosque that was demolished by the Almohads (12th-13th century) which miraculously was spared and rediscovered in 1948.
It contained an ablutions pool which was fed by 3 reservoirs. The exterior is decorated with chevrons and pointed arches and the interior has scalloped and horseshoe arches and floral ornamentation.
Tickets are available for the koubba as part of the 'visit 3 for 60 dirham' starting with the Museum du Marrakech, the Ben Youssef Medersa and in this order only, finishing with the visit to the Koubba.
During my trip through Morocco I also brought a visit to Marrakesh. Being in Marrakesh was almost a culture shock, because the 2 weeks before we travelled through not-touristic places of Morocco and here, in Marrakesh, there where lot's of them! But Marrakesh is Unique! I had 3 beautifull day's there and I can recommend it to every one!!
