Anyone in Marrakesh around Jan 8-11?

by sc780913

My friend and I will be travelling in Morocco in early Jan, after New Year's in Spain. We are interested in this Sahara desert camel trek, which gets cheaper the more people you have. Is anyone interested in a 2nights/3days trip into the desert from Marrakesh?

I just got back from Morocco and one thing I can say is beware of helpers/guides. They will take all of your money.

Travel Tips for Marrakesh

Caravan site

by mvtouring

I am not quite sure where this was, but is took us approx one hour by bus to get there. The whole place looks like a caravan site and you eat inside the tents, sit on lovely carpets and get the most devine food to eat.

real Moroccan atmosphere

by vtveen about One of these local/rural restaurants

We made two day trips into the High Atlas and of course we had to eat something during the day.

The first day we had a ‘grand taxi’ and our driver recommended a small restaurant along the road in the Berber village of Ijoukak. Tajines are simmering the whole, but we ordered a Berber omelette. In no time they were served in a frying pan and it was simple but delicious. (I have to admit I wouldn’t have stopped at such a restaurant without our local driver !!).

Our second experience - not being afraid any longer - was in the village of Telouet, after visiting the Kasbah. Our ‘guide’ recommended a restaurant along the main road called ‘Chez Mohamed Café Restaurant Palace de Telouet’; wonderful name for just a couple of plastic tables in the dust along the road. It took rather a long time, but again the food was excellent. Just the ‘adventure’ of eating in a local restaurant with a lot of real Moroccan atmosphere.
It was so cheap, perhaps a couple of euro’s for the two/three of us.

The city walls are beautiful, they change colour during the day. They were not quite, what I was expecting. I thought that you could walk on the walls but there did not seem to be any way to get up there.

Dar Cherifa - totally unexpected

by vtveen

We were strolling around the souks when somebody recommended us to visit Dar Cherifa. Although a little bit afraid it could be the umpteenth ‘carpet shop’, we followed the signs through the maze of alleys and found this hidden riad.

After the entrance door was opened we entered a fantastic riad. It turned out to be a beautiful restored house from the 16th century, which now houses a literary café and an art gallery dedicated to promote Moroccan culture and heritage in the heart of the medina. We understood it is one of the oldest riads in the medina.

It has a beautiful patio with a bed of red roses in a fountain, surrounded by exhibit rooms with art and having antique doors, carved cedar wood ceilings and stunning stucco work. There is a small library, but we did read our own travel guide about Morocco seating on comfortable cushions (the roof terrace was too hot for us) and having a nice cup of coffee far away from the hustle and bustle of the medina. To be honest their coffee isn’t cheap, but the peaceful atmosphere is worth the money. It is also possible to have a lunch in Dar Cherifa.

Dar Cherifa is open daily from 9.00 am to 7.00 pm. There is (of course) no admission fee.

I was only there for one day.We went and had a fantastic meal in lovely resturant not far from the souk(old city). It was like walking into 1001 night.Lovely carpets, fantastic walls and of cource lots of gold.
Walking around the souk was probably like turning the time back 100 years or more.
