i stayed here with some friends and we rented the house (riad stands for private house, sort of private hotel, basicaly your house but with staff and brekfast), so we rented the whole house for ourselves. we were 8 and payed each about 35 euros or something.

you can rent only a room for one night or for the whole week, again you can rent the house in exclusivity or per day per room.

all rooms are just fantastic, well decorated in traditional style from morocco but always with a french fine taste as the young owner is french.

the terrace open view to marrakech roof tops and mosques skyline.

Marrakesh

by axeoxala

Hi,

I am going to be traveling from November 26/27 to December 2, planning to spend part of that time in Marrakesh and part in Andalucia.

Does anyone have recommendations for riads/housing in Marrakesh? I am looking at hotel eden, Riad des droles, at the moment.

By the way, anybody with a similar timing/location willing to meet up?

Thanks!

RE: Marrakesh

Thanks!

I've been reviewing the forum quite a lot, as well as other places, but I am always open to great input from knowledgeable people.

Look forward to hearing from other people, and will appreciate all advice (and will keep reading!)

Riads for 40-50 Euros per night? PLEASE HELP!!!

by RusskiPower

I've been searching high and low but couldn't seem to find moderately priced riads. They all seem to cater to the upper niches of the market.

Fellow VT'ers, PLEASE help me find riads at 40-50 Euros per night for a double room!

I am travelling to Casablanca - Rabat - Tangier - Fes - Marrakech - Ouarzazate - Essauoira. Info on riads in any (or all) of those cities will be GREATLY appreciated!

Thanks a lot in advance!

Find Darjani on VT (she is in Marrakesh) - I noticed her external site listed a riad doubleroom at 50 euros. Otherwise, I live in Fes and don't really know the riad game. Good luck.

Riad des Droles is located right in the Ancient Medina. You can basically go anywhere being not far away from your hotel, in this case from your riad. enjoy.

Travel Tips for Marrakesh

Escargot!!

by TomorrowsAngel about Street Vendor No. 68

In Djemaa el-Fna, there are heaps of food vendors selling freshly cropped/cooked/caught food. Honestly, I was too chicken to try these delectable molluscs, but other members of our group said they were pretty damn tasty!! Apparently the garlic snails are the way to go.

Koutoubia

by Oana_bic

The Koutoubia is one of the biggest mosques in the Western Muslim world. Its hispano-moorish style is of an apparent simplicity combined with discreet luxury. This masterpiece was built by the Almohads in one of its imperial cities. Today, it's a starting point that's not to be missed before heading out to explore the medina.
The minaret of the Koutoubia is a square tower made of rose-coloured sandstone adorned with a delicate sculptured decoration that seems just like lacework on stone. The minaret is topped by a lantern, decorated and square, as well as a ribbed cupola. The close proportion between the width and height of the minaret of the mosque bestows a perfect harmony to this masterpiece of hispano-moorish art which was taken as a model for the Giralda in Seville. According to a legend, the three orbs of golden copper which crown the cupola were made from the melted down jewellery of Yacoub-el-Mansour's wife. Yacoub-el-Mansour completed the construction of the tower began by the sultan Abd el-Moumen. Another legend about the orbs says that they are guarded by genies (jin) and that terrible misfortunes will plague those who try to steal them.Koutoubia in Arabic means "the mosque of booksellers" because once, the surrounding shops were mostly dedicated to the sale of books and antique manuscripts. ( XII -XIII centuries.)The first mosque, erected after 1147, was later destroyed because its orientation towards Mecca wasn't correct. The foundation of the first mosque is still visible today. The construction of the current mosque, built according to the instructions of Abd el-Moumen, was completed in the same year construction started, in 1158, and ordered by Yacoub el-Mansour.
This splendid work of art is subdivided into 16 naves and a wider middle nave. Here, the luxurious almoravid ornamentation and the décor of Andalusian inspiration exalt the simplicity and pureness of its lines. The 11 stalactite cupolas, capitals and moulded structures make the Koutoubia one of the finest examples of Almohad art.

Seems that everywhere you go,...

by pjallittle

Seems that everywhere you go, there's a sale. These little group sales merchants settle into a spot that they favour, right on the streets, no taxes, no rent, and the sky is their only overhead.

They are not terribly successful, spending far too much time bartering and negotiating. They seem to enjoy that as much or more than moving their products.

Invariably, the next day, someone will have the same article for less, that's the agony and the ecstasy of this type of shopping.

"At Majorelle Gardens"

I found this guide ... he was guiding a tourist group ... but as he was waiting for the group to visit the Museum and garden ... he began to speak with me, he was from Tanger :)))
That is what I mean ... they don't want to speak with you because the can get something of you ...but because they like to speak with people .... to have comunication ... and that is something that occidental people are not use to ... :)))

"Medersa Ben Yousef"

The man that sels postcards at Merdesa Ben Yousef ... everything at this islamic school is for pic. Not the man ... but everything :))
