Transportation from Mohammed V Airport

by CarlEdwardRoss

I am trying to get to Meknes. I am due to arrive at the airport in Casablanca at 6:00am on August 2, 2003. How do I get to the train station once I arrive? I do not want to get lost nor have much time to. Will a taxi get me there faster? If so how much can I expect to pay for a trip that far?

Hello you!

There is a trainstation close to the aeroport Med V .You'd better take a train to Mekness from there. Perhaps, you should change train in Rabat. Otherwise, a private taxi would be much more expensive than by train... The taxidriver may ask about us$100.00 or even more...
You are welcome here. Have good trip!

hi

you have a trainstation inside the airport with train going to casablanca voyageur (name of the station, not casa port) very often.
from there you have train almost every hour or two to meknes.
some shedules: 7h15 arrival 10h31 - 8h15 arrival 11h37-10h15 arrival 13h48.
the prices from casa voyageur to meknes are around 60-80 dirhams (6 to 10 dollars) in second class and from 90 to 120 dirham in first class.

for more information you can check the morrocan train website: www.oncf.ma
i hope you speak french since there is no english version.

a taxi would not get you any faster and will cost you a lot of money.

I hope you will enjoy you stay in this beautiful country.

Always remeber that moroccans always like to rip americans, ozzys, nzelands british and canadians off. A normal taxi to 6km can usualy cost maximum 3 us dollars. if you offer 50 dirhams (5 dollars) , stick to your arguing money and you'll be able to get the taxi for it. remember that $100 is almost the national minimum wage and if you pay that you're actually paying a lot of money that a simple moroccon would pay onl y 2$ or 3$. don't allow that to happen please. Also good is to rent a car for your self. you have highway that goes from casablanca to fes passing not far in meknes. roads are not that bad and driving should be ok. a car cost not more than 30$ 40$ 45$ 50$ dollars a day. good luck, yours Joao Leitao

I believe there is a train station at or near the airport. Trains are slow though. Almost 5 hours to Meknes. Taxis are also possible. You can negociate one for about 700 dirhams so it depends how many you are sharing with ;)
Have a nice time ;)

Travel Tips for Meknes

Place el-Hadim

by iaint

This is perhaps the centrepiece of the medina, and the guide book reckons it used to be like the Djemaa el-Fna in Marrakech. Then the municipality tried to gentrify it, and it lost its charm.

You have the Bab el-Mansour gates on the south side, and the entrances to the souks on the north. Sunday afternoon the locals seem to pile into the souks, and hang around the square looking for entertainment.

I came across a pair of snake “charmers” hustling away and drawing the crowds. They had several vipers (including a tiny horned one) and something a little less toxic to hang around your neck for a photo opportunity. Be prepared to hand over some loose change to watch the show!

Musee Dar Jamai

by barryg23

Like many museums in Morocco, the building of Musee Dar Jamai is as impressive as many of the exhibits it contains. It’s a 19th century building on the north side of Place el Hadim, the main square in the medina. Initially a home for government officials, it was converted into a museum in 1920. Some of the exhibits date from Moulay Ismail’s reign, when Meknes was the most important city in the country. However, none of the exhibits was especially interesting and we didn’t spend too long exploring the various rooms. The museum also has an Andalusian garden which would be lovely were it maintained properly but sadly was neglected an overgrown.

Meknes
Don't remember to much what I saw in Meknes, it has been a long time since I was last here in 2004. I was pretty much was using Meknes as a base to visit the near by village of Moulay Idriss and to see the roman ruins of Volubilis which you can read about on there pages.

After flicking back through some photos it looks like I proberly just walked around everywhere which is something I always do wherever I go and it is the best way to explore a town, but I don't recall visiting anywhere special only the medina. The only thing I do remember about Meknes that it is not as popular as Fes or Marrakech but is worth atleast 1 night or 2 to use as a base to visit the near by villages.
