I will be visiting Maputo on business for a couple of days and wondered if there is anywhere I can find rocks for use in my hobby of lapidary.

Travel Tips for Maputo

Moz Visa at the border

It's 100% possible to get the visa done at the borders. But not that easy.....Especially if you're travelling through Komatipoort / Ressono Garcia posts (from SA) as there're hundreds of people queing in front of you!! Be prepare for a massive delay -- up to 2 hours I'd say. (depending on what period you travel, the approx. waiting time is around 30-40 minutes)

The visa costs 25 USD/person/30 days stay.
Or maybe it's a better idea driving through Swaziland (and spend a couple of nights there) as you pass through Lomahashaa / Namaasha posts to Maputo, a less-travelled route.

Jacaranda trees in Maputo

Jacaranda is a big tree with blue flowers. Jacarandas prefer a warm coastal climate that is frost-free. And is naturally found in the southern part of Africa, Australia and Brazil. The streets of Maputo has a lot of them.

Despite the desparate economic situation in Mocambique, it would be hard to believe that there is still migration into Mocambique..
Ali, migrated here from Lebanon after the war stopped, along with his two cousins botht of whom are illiterate. they run two or three small shops .. selling bread, coffee and such. obviously they have prospered.. It is nice to make immediate connections with people.. who share with you centuries of transmigratory patterns.. after all my own people have been migrating all over the world for more than 2000 years...

Money in Maputo

The local currency of Mozambique is Meticais. Notes are in circulation of the value from 1000 to 100.000 Meticais.
In Maputo both the South African Rand or Dollar are accepted. Furthermore the Euro becomes more and more accepted as well.
ATM's will give you local Meticais and there are several foreign exchanges in town.
Toll Fees on the way from the border to Maputo can be paid in SA Rands.

The ATM service in Maputo is good. The terminals are located inside small rooms close to the banks (see photo).
I had no problem using my Visa card for withdrawal. And the exchange rate was even a bit better than the money exchange "cambio".
