Flying visit from South Africa

by schmechi

During my South Africa journey I'll stay in Komatipoort, just 2 kms away from the Mozambique boarder. So I'm lusting for a stamp of that country in my passport too. To be honest, my travel schedule does not allow much time, I just can afford up to three hours... So is it worth to cross the boarder just for geographic reasons? Is there anything to see/visit near the boarder to South African Komatipoort?

As an alternative I'd be able to cross the boarder in Giriyondo inside Kruger Park to get into Greater Limpopo park, but it would cause a detour. Would this be a better option?

I already checked visa requirements and I am allowed to cross the boarder with my rented car. So is there anything else to be considered?

Hi

it will take you at least an hour to get through both border posts and perhaps 30 mins or longer coming back. Nothing of note before Maputo which is an hour away from the border so 3 hours is not enough. You could just drive through - have a cooldrink in Ressano Garcia which is just a dusty and dirty frontier town, then drive back into SA. Entering at Giriyondo is not a better option - not much but bush and you will need a 4x4 vehicle.

Travel Tips for Maputo

Mural Advertising

by MarioPortugal

Once in Maputo a visitor will notice hand-painted Mural advertisements exposed all over the city's building walls.
Those Ads are made by local people, definitely genuine artists !!!

Featured on this Tip's picture is Mr Bata (mCel: +258 825-748-863 ), 39, who lives in Maputo and is available for any tailored painting job.

Besides Mural Advertisement & Marketing, Mr Bata also does human & animal sculptures (such as Elephants, zebras and giraffes) out of concrete.

Hail Jefe, Nuestra Comandante//

People may hold different opinons about Fidel Jefe y Comandante de Cuba. But one thing no one can deny him.. NO SINGLE LEADER IN THE WORLD NOR ANY COUNTRY HAS HELPED AFRICA IN MEDICAL TERMS AS HE HAS.. Being a Doctor involved in Humanitarian work, this brings me great pride to be associated with a country which does so much to provide health care for Africa I will have an opportunity hopefully in the near future to teach the cultural aspects of Medicine in Mozambique.. THE FACULTY OF MEDICINE IS ALMOST ENTIRELY MADE UP OF SPECIALISTS FROM CUBA...

If you wish to help the students who are from
Mocambique and Sao Tome, please bring medical text books in Portuguese if you have access to them...

Border Posts to Southern Mozambique

by MikeAtSea

Maputo is very close to both the Kingdom of Swaziland and the Republic of South Africa. Two border posts connect Mozambique today with the two neighbouring countries.
The border post of Ressano Garcia connects to Komatipoort in South Africa.
The border post of Namaacha connects to Lomahasha in Swaziland.

Please note the border closes at night. I have had to sleep once in Komatipoort because I only arrived at the border at 4:15 p.m. Check with the Mozambican High Commission before heading out since in some times may vary. During the summer vacation borders may remain open longer. Also check the fees in advance. I have travelled across the border so many times and each time I paid something else.

Friendly local People

by MarioPortugal

Mozambique was a very nice surprise. I must confess I was not expecting to find out how friendly and beautiful local people are. I couldn't help but felt in love. My heart lays now in Maputo. I want to go back. Lovely. (April 2006).

Map of Southern Mozambique

by MikeAtSea

On this map one can clearly see the proximity to the South African border at Komatipoort, as well as Swaziland - as Maputo is in the Southern part of Mozambique. Road connections are across to Swaziland, to the Mpumalanga province in South Africa and parallel along the coast North towards Beira. Another road leads parallel South towards the KwaZulu Natal province however one requires a 4x4 on this "road".
