HIstorical luxury in Swakopmund, Namibia
The old German city of Swakopmund, on the south Atlantic coast in Namibia, has quite a few comfortable and luxurious hotels for the weary traveler. Swakop is a very relaxing and gracious city. There are several hotels that I could easily recommend.
But, I believe one of the best is the Swakopmund Hotel. It's situated in what used to be an old railway station. Completely refurbished, the Swakop hotel offers every feature that you'd expect in a fine American or European hotel. Service is excellent, rooms are clean, restaurants have excellent food. And, it's only a short walk (maybe 3 blocks) to a very nice shopping section of Swakopmund. The historic building is quite fetching, and interesting to photograph and explore. The rooms are comfortable, and after a week in the bush, the satellite TV is a welcome return to civilization.
If you wish to make phone calls to the US or Europe, the cost is not too dear directly from your room. (Although as is always the case, THE cheap way to call is to get a phone card, generally available at petrol stations.)
Famous people have called the Swakop Hotel home for a night. My daughter's room had a placard indicating that Stevie Wonder has stayed in her room back in 1998.
Something extra special and unique? Although it's not my "cup of tea", the Swakopmund Hotel also has an adjoining casino, where you can try your luck.
