Jackie and Scratchie the meerkat by GillianMcLaughlin The Chameleon Guest House is a wonderful experience. It caters for a range of comfort levels, from simple dorm accommodation to a honeymoon suite, and all of it served with a generous helping of true Namibian courtesy. As the Guest house also acts as mission control for Chameleon Safari, it can be quite a bustling place at times. The whole operation is run by Jackie, who is advised and distracted by her very important partner, Scratchy the meerkat!
The complex offers everything from en-suite facilities to quads, and the rates include breakfast and also linen in the rooms. There is a swimming pool, a bar area, internet facilities, left luggage and also a safe. The atmosphere is second to none, and is complemented by some great insider information and advice for travelers. The Chameleon team were incredibly responsive to our requests for information, even before we arrived. I cant recommend them highly enough. Take a dip after a long, hot dusty ride by GillianMcLaughlin During out 6-day safari we stayed in a range of wonderful places, none more so that the campsite at the Otjitotongwe Cheetah farm. They had 9 camping spaces, clean shared ablution facilities, a bar with darts and pool equipment if you were bored by the stories of the cheetahs (unlikely), and very friendly hosts. Campers can use the braii for cooking.
The greatest thing abot this location was the splash pool which campers could use! Just look at it would you? There was also a tree platform which can be climed to get a wonderful view all the way to the mountains. Otjitotongwe also has lodges which can be booked on a dinner, bed and breakfast basis (no self catering - they are traditional thatched lodgings and an accidental fire would be disasterous!). For other activities please see stories and pictures in the "must see activities! Entrance to sinclair farm, namibia by Myndo I present here the Ghaub Guest Farm, the Buellsport Guest Farm and the Sinclair Guest Farm as examples for the many (also of good quality) Guest Farms in Namibia. Almost every one of them started as a farm (with cattle), but since there isn't often enough water to feed all the animals a farm would need to survive, some of them discovered a new income: Tourism. So now they are Guest houses. - But some do still have their original Income and have cows. At most of the Guest farms you eat together with the owners and other residents. The meat is mostly self-hunted (in their area) and very good. It is Kudu or Oryx or some other Antelope. Very fine meat, indeed. Also: don't miss the evening drives most Guest Farms offer! You get an idea of the area they are living (and working) in and you get to see a lot of animals if you are a little lucky. The owners are also happy if you speak with them about their work and problems. Don't be shy.
Every one of them is special and different. At Sinclair you can visit a copper-mine on their ground and they make (almost) all of the food themselves (very good bread and sausages), Sinclair Link At Buellsport they have special hiking tours, (see the "off the beaten track" tip.) Buellsport Link And Ghaub is an old mission station that they renovated and added some buildings in the same stile. Wonderful surrounding "park". Also you have here the luxury of a very nice swimming pool. Ghaub Guest Farm Link

Windhoek Country Resort - pool area by GillianMcLaughlin My friend’s cousin who lives in Cape Town works for a small chain of exclusive hotels. She managed to get us a deal on their hotel in Windhoek for our first night at the modest cost of around US$ 30 for the night. We turned up and found ourselves in the lap of luxury, the likes of which I had never experienced in my life. I couldn't say that this is the hotel I would have sought out for myself, but for the price we paid, even I could put up with a bit of pampering!
The Windhoek Country Club is a green oasis that has sprouted in the scrubland on the outskirts of the town. It offers everything for the discerning traveller: very comfortable rooms which open directly onto the Flintstone-like pool area (see photo), an amazing restaurant offering an outstanding hot buffet (including a do-it-yourself stir-fry cooked fresh), extremely polite and welcoming staff, golf course, putting green, bowling green, 2 floodlit tennis courts, swimming pool… there’s even a casino! The hotel runs a shuttle service into Windhoek

Bambatsi by Myndo Located opposite of the Ugab Terraces - unfortunately you can not see the from there, but never mind, the view is spectacular enough. The Ranch is standing on the top of a hill It is one of the oldest Guest Farms of Namibia. But nicely renovated and decorated. The rooms are just lovely (and do also have that view).
You stay in rustical Bungalows (see picture) with all stile- and luxury. Warm water is beeing made with fire under the boilers outside of the bungalow. Afternoon- round drive on the farm is included (if the owner doesn?t have to buy some food in the over-next town, which is about 200km away). Dinner on the terrace while the sun goes down and the stars come up.

Camp Mwisho by Myndo Located right on the rim of the "Big dunes". Camp Mwisho contains 4 Tent-houses. 3 are close together, one -the"honeymoon-suite" is a little on the side. The tents are built on wooden platforms and stay all year. In it you have a real double-bed with all comfort and outside in the back a real toilet and shower. They are inside a bamboo-fence but right adjacent. Luxus in tents. Never had THAT before. The view is wonderful. All you can see is pure desert. Wide dry land. Wild birds, antelopes, etc.
Dinner is in the main building where the owners live. The food was excellent, I would give them five stars for the cooking and for beeing so friendly. Lunch, Dinner and Sunset-Drive with Sundowner inclusive. By the way: if you speak french: they are from Belgia. They were in Zimbabwe until they had to leave. Now they are here and had that idea with ballooning in the desert (see must-do tip). The Balloon drive (see must do tipps) starts from here or from Sesriem, depends on how many and where the people that booked it, are. Twyfelfontein Lodge (you can see the open-air bar) by toonsarah We just stayed one night here, and that was enough. The plus points about this lodge are its convenient location only a few miles from the fascinating prehistoric rock art, and its attractive setting. There's a small pool with good views of the red mountains and local wildlife, and an okay restaurant serving slightly bland buffet dinners and good breakfasts. Both this and the bar are open sided, so can be a bit chilly at night, but are decorated in an interesting style with lots of rocky outcrops and tree trunks coming up through the floor. So why were we the only people in the bar? Perhaps because most of the other guests seemed to be in tour groups who were making their own amusements somewhere else? Anyway, this large number of tour parties was the main down-side, but otherwise this is a reasonable, if somewhat impersonal, place to base yourself for a visit to this area. I guess we were just spoiled by the quality of some of the other accommodations we visited in Namibia, and this one just didn't really match that standard.
The rooms are in individual bungalows which are quite attractive - but the door to ours suddenly flew open as we were relaxing before dinner, so perhaps you should take care to always lock the door!

Our room at Eningu by toonsarah This is a good place to stay for your first couple of nights in Namibia. You probably won't want to drive too far on your first day - it certainly took us a little while to adjust to the driving conditions on those gravel roads. Eningu is just over an hour from the airport and is a lovely relaxing place to start your exploration of Namibia. The rooms, in adobe buildings, are lovely and the food good too. There's some interesting ceramics and art work dotted around, a friendly labrador dog (Shaka) and some pleasant walks in the surrounding bush.
After dinner we all went outside and Stephanie led us up onto the flat roof of the main building where there's a good telescope. If like me you live in a city you'll be astounded by the number and brilliance of the stars, and even if you live in the countryside I doubt you've seen anything quite as spectacular! We saw some of the brightest shooting stars I've ever seen, and found three of Jupiter's moons through the telescope. When we were there in July the nights were freezing, so after this we were ready for the local brandy and a hot water bottle in the bed!

Room at Kulala by toonsarah This is a great place to stay on the edge of the Namib desert. It's in a really good location, with its own entrance to the National Park so you can get in there early and be ahead of the crowds. We went on a guided tour and had our excellent guide, Francis, to ourselves. He took us to lots of great places and each time we seemed to get there just before most of the other tourists, and be leaving just as it got busy! The rooms are really special - built half of canvas and half adobe, and all with lovely views of the desert (although don't expect red dunes here). The only draw-back is the food which wasn't as good as elsewhere in Namibia. But there's a lovely bar with a terrace overlooking a waterhole (quite distant) and a cozy log fire.
The adobe half of each room has a flat roof, and if you ask they'll make up your bed there and you can sleep under the stars - we chickened out as the nights were really cold!

Chris and Einstein by toonsarah This is a little touch of the Swiss Alps in the middle of the African desert! It's built in the style of a Swiss chalet and run by Sam, a colourful Swiss ex-pat. The rooms are comfortable and the breakfast fantastic, especially the home-made muesli and wonderful selection of cheeses. They also serve dinner but we didn't eat there so I can't say if that is as good as breakfast. There's a very pleasant garden where you can relax and unwind after a busy day. There's also a secure car parking area. The only downside we thought was that it's a little way out of the town centre - not too far to walk perhaps, but we didn't fancy doing that at night so were obliged to take the car.
You may think that the hotel is run by Sam as I said above, but you soon come to realise that the real boss is his dog Einstein! He has his own chalet in the garden where he watches over everything. One evening we sat with Sam over a drink and he proudly showed us his photo album. Like that of any proud father it was full of baby photos - of Einstein!
