More about Canon Lodge

cosmopolit's Namibia Page

by cosmopolit

Never thought I might ever visit arid areas or desert but then Namibia happened to me. It became sort of an ongoing relationship since. Thanks to wonderful guides who know and love this country I learned such a lot about life under tough conditions. Ever since I appreciate the smallest living creatures or plants even more. Fascinating what forms of life the battle for survival brings about the planet. Let's be careful with it, it's too precious to waste.

Unforgettable sunset at Canon lodge near Fish River Canyon where time is irelevant. Fantastic location just nestled around the boulders in foreground, view from lookout on top.
Complete stillness, cool drink in hand spectacular view what more can one ask for?

Before wallpaper was introduced interior decorating has been a pretty tough job. Meantime historic events have been captured to be passed on to new generations in one of the largest collections of rock art in Namibia. Painting in top pic, they used lasting colours unlike us nowadays.

Engravings at Twyfelfontein bottom pic, rock could not be scratched with stones so they must have had very strong tools. There used to be a cave until it collapsed.

Valerie,

During the day you need light clothes, during the evenings it can get cool and cold during the nights especially in the desserts. So take a warm track suite.
Namibia is beautiful. Do not miss Etosha national park. One of the best game viewing spots in Africa.
Have a look at my openingpage.
Best of luck.

johan.

Travel Tips for Windhoek

Windhoek Lager

by Gili_S

The Windhoek Lager is the local beer here of course, you can find it almost anywhere around the country, in restaurants, shops and most important, is camping sites. It is the best as cold beer after a hot day in the desert.

Connect with your inner self at Avis Dam

by Edla

This is a great place to have a famly picnic or to go hiking. Friends and I go hiking around the dam. Some people actually go fishing in the dam.
It's not for swimming though.

There are no entrance fees.

THE NATIONAL MUSEUM OF NAMIBIA

by DAO

This is a very fascinating and free museum. Unfortunately the staff will ask you for a ‘donations' but just ignore them. The Museum is part of an old army garrison that contains lot of interesting Political exhibits from the last century. It shows the struggles of SWAPO (South West Africa People's Organization) to gain independence from Germany. Among the exhibits it shows imprisonment of SWAPO members in South Africa, Independence, and the first elections. It also has exhibits on colonial times and displays of the Constitution, Flag, National Anthem and Coat of Arms. Interestingly, the official language of Namibia is ENGLISH.

Please note: Their website is not currently working.

Alte Feste

by georeiser

The "Alte Feste" (Old Fortress) was completed in 1890 during the German colonization of Namibia, and is the oldest standing building in the city. It was the military headquarter in 1915. In 1957 it was declared a national monument. It now houses the state museum with independence collection.
