TRANSPORTATION FROM AIRPORT TO WINDHOEK

by sgaudun

What is the most inexpensive transportation from the international airport to the Rivendell Guesthouse in Windhoek?

They would charge me 170 Namibian dollars for 2. There should be something cheaper than that.

Hi,

why not hire a car?
Those agencies will collect you at any time from the airport.
170 Nam$ are not much for ~ 50 k.

Regards,
Achim.

We took a taxi when we arrived and thought that for the distance it wasn't so bad.

There is a bus shuttle though that leaves after every flight arrival... details here

Travel Tips for Windhoek

ATM in Windhoek, Namibia

by georeiser

There are ATM's at the airport and in the city. But some banks didn't accept withdrawal from my Visacard and Mastercard. Among them are "Bank Windhoek", with several terminals in the city. But "Nedbank" did. The highest withdrawal amount at one time is 1000N$, which is about 130 USD.
(The rate is OK, slightly better than the rate at Money changers).

Himba

by georeiser

The Himbas are an ethnic nomadic tribe living in the Kunene region in northern Namibia. However there are also some Himbas in Windhoek doeing business, where they sell their handycraft in the markets. They still wear their traditional clothes of goat skin, and the women are topless at the markets. They are beautiful people.

My approach towards them with my videocamera was ignorant and offensive. I should have asked first and not treated them as alians. They were angry, and I deleted the scenes with them sitting topless. I can see my mistake, and am sorry. My advice is to hide your camera and ask for permission first.

SOSSUSVLEI

by DAO

If you want a good campsite at Sossusvlei (Sesriem campsite) you need to book in Windhoek and/or ahead of time. Otherwise you only get cancelations or sleep in your car.

Cuisine from the Motherland

by Edla about La Marmite

Ah, La Marmite! The ambience is great without it being overdone. You know how people like to do up a place and you can tell it's just for the tourist?
Well La Marmite is not like that, it's real...beautiful in it's simpleness. Ah, all their food is really good. I especially like the Mafe, which is a chicken dish done in ground nut. The chargrilled lamb chops are just as delicious.

Presidential home

by mvtouring

Windhoek offers quite a variety of architectural styles, but it is mainly colonial so you can see German-style houses and churches, half-timbered houses and Sam's monstrous modern presidential buildings. It is said that this building is already costing more than $8,000,000 and it is build by the Chinese in exchange for the mineral rights of Namibia. Makes you wonder how so much money can be spend on one building when the country is poverty stricken.
