Waterberg Plateau rest camp: One of Namibia's most beautifully situated camps

The lovely Waterberg Plateau (formerly the Bérnabé de la Bat) camp, is nestled in woodland on the flanks of the plateau and - to my mind - has one of the most beautiful locations of any of the government rest camp in Namibia.

Being a government-run camp, it's not ultra luxurious, but the setting is gorgeous. After a few days exploring landscapes that are sprawlingly wide open, I always find it somehow reassuring to retreat to a place where I felt less sheltered and less exposed - maybe it's that long buried survival instinct kicking in!

Camp accommodation is fairly basic self catering with an on site restaurant that gets mixed reviews. The camp ground is reported to be particularly good, although these days I consider myself a reformed backpacker and try not to camp unless it's a safari tent with en suite facilities!!!

One of the camp's great charms is the wonderful diversity of wildlife that you can see without leaving camp at all. In addition to the wonderful woodland birdlife, ground squirrels and dassies are common sights around camp, as is the gorgeous Damara dikdik, Namibia's smallest buck (antelope) which is usually hard to spot elsewhere.

And oh, that beautifully located swimming pool is absolutely divine, especially for a moonlight swim on a hot summer night!!!

Bernabe de la Bat Rest Camp: 5-star camping

I never saw such comfortable campgrounds before going to Namibia : clean ablution blocks, restaurant, shop, swimming-pool, grill... And all that with a view on the red mountain, it was fantastic. After observing the beautiful birds (over 200 bird species in Waterberg) and watching the sunset on the Table Mountain, we spent the evening cooking dinner with our great cook and guide, Mellican, played with the squirrels around and gazed at the stars before resting in our comfortable tents. The good thing when you travel during the low season is that you can have a whole campground for your group only, what a luxe !
